Áno Garoúna combines an amphitheatrical hillside setting with olive groves, hiking trails, and sweeping views. Trails lead to the hilltop, the radar station, and Kato Garoúna; different starting points and trail sections provide practical guidance when choosing a route.
Village Location, Olive Groves, and Views
Áno Garoúna lies in an amphitheatrical setting on the western slopes of Mount Agioi Deka and is surrounded by dense olive groves. From here, you can see Agios Gordios Beach and the larger settlement of Kato Garoúna opposite. A hiking trail leads from Áno Garoúna to Kato Garoúna. This connects views of the settlement with a specific route to get there: Kato Garoúna is both a viewpoint and a hiking destination in two different contexts.
Hiking to the Hilltop and Radar Station
The Áno Garoúna–Radar route can be combined with Trail 1 to form a circular route starting from Áno Garoúna. An alternative route starts at the entrance to the village. The different starting points offer a clear planning choice: would you like to start the circular route in the village or take the alternative route from the village entrance? Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The trail passes through vegetation and woodland towards the hilltop, where the Pantokrator Monastery is located. The walk to the summit is estimated to take around 45 minutes. The section from the monastery to the radar station follows a concrete road and takes 10 minutes. The route leads to a radar station with views across the entire island. For planning purposes, the walking time to the hilltop and the section from the monastery to the radar station are listed separately.
Corfu in the Wider Travel Context
Across the wider destination of Corfu, ancient trails in the municipal unit of Achilleion wind through the forested mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna; they are suitable for hiking. These trails are part of the wider Corfu context and should be distinguished from the specific routes in Áno Garoúna.
A separate cultural highlight is Corfu Old Town: the Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic urban fabric has been almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Museum of Asian Art is also located in the Old Town. Its collection comprises more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia.
The Museum of Asian Art can be reached from Corfu Port by bus line 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before you travel. As well as hiking and landscapes around Áno Garoúna, visitors can choose to explore independent cultural attractions elsewhere in the wider destination of Corfu.
