Afion lies on Corfu’s north coast. A path leads from here down through the peninsula to Porto Timoni; a stay in the village and a challenging walk therefore represent different planning priorities.

Village Architecture and Landscape Views

Afion is one of Corfu’s oldest villages. Its architecture includes whitewashed stone buildings; narrow streets and lanes are lined with houses covered in bougainvillea. From Afion, views stretch across the surrounding hills and the sea, as well as towards Kravia, Sikia, Gineka, Mathraki, Othonoi, and Erikoussa. There are also views of the Diapontian Islands and Agios Georgios Bay. Planning a visit therefore brings together two sides of the place: the village’s narrow paths and the views across its surroundings.

Excavations at Akri Arilla are considered evidence of Afion’s Neolithic origins. This archaeological context adds a historical focus to the village and landscape.

The Route to Porto Timoni

The descent to the coves of Porto Timoni is described as steep, narrow, and challenging; the walk takes at least 30 minutes. Make sure to allow for this time and check current trail conditions before setting out. This takes both the described nature of the route and the minimum walking time into account when deciding whether Porto Timoni suits your stay.

Nearby Porto Timoni is a small, traditional church built into the rock. The two coves are sandy; a corridor of shrubs and bushes separates the smaller one from the larger. Along with the route, these offer two further points to consider: a distinctive architectural feature and the different sizes of the coves.

Corfu as a Distinct Cultural Focus

If you would like to add an urban cultural focus to your stay on Corfu, Corfu Old Town has a different character from Afion. Its historic urban fabric has been almost entirely preserved, and its buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town provides residents and visitors with information on more than 80 attractions in the city; it is complemented by high-quality audiovisual material. Check its availability before your trip.

The Museum of Asian Art is located in the Old Town and houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. For travel from Corfu Port to the museum, visitor information lists bus line 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the timetable when planning your visit.

Shape your search around which of these priorities matters most for your stay.
