Minia can be explored from three perspectives: beach, wine and local history. In summer, the beach is the main reason visitors flock to the village. At Gentilini Winery & Vineyards, visitors can sample wines of different varieties and learn about them; guided tours of the vineyards and winery are also available on request. The church of Panagia Magganas adds a historical dimension to the trip. These topics have different focuses and can be considered separately when planning.

Getting your bearings in Kefalonia

Minia lies about six kilometres southwest of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. Argostoli is therefore a clear reference point for locating the village on the island. The direction and approximate distance together help you find your bearings in Kefalonia. This gives you a brief overview of Minia’s location and clearly places it in relation to the island’s capital.

Beach time and facilities

The beach near Minia is considered the main reason the village fills with visitors in summer. For guests whose trip revolves primarily around beach time, this seasonal popularity is a factor when choosing when to visit. Spasmata, a separate beach with sun loungers, umbrellas and a beach kiosk, is also near Minia. These facilities are a specific point of reference for anyone who values such amenities at the beach. Check whether they are currently available before your visit.

Wine tasting or a tour

At Gentilini Winery & Vineyards, visitors can sample wines of different varieties and learn about them. They can also take a guided tour of the vineyards and winery on request. The experiences focus on different aspects: the tasting centres on the wines and information about them, while the tour includes the vineyards and winery. This can help you decide whether you would rather discover the different wines or also explore the vineyards and winery on a guided tour. As tours are available on request, confirm current arrangements before your visit.

Panagia Magganas: two periods in the building’s history

The church of Panagia Magganas in Minia is a historical landmark. It was first built in 1666. The present building was modelled on the earlier one after it was destroyed in the earthquakes that struck Kefalonia in August 1953. The dates therefore refer to different events: 1666 marks the original construction, not the present building; August 1953 marks the destruction of its predecessor. The present building is therefore not the one built in 1666, but was modelled on it. This distinction is useful for understanding the chronology: it connects the early construction with the effects of the earthquakes and the design of the present building. Anyone interested in Minia’s history will find a clearly dated sequence of events rather than a single date.
