For a stay in Gkoura, there are several cultural and historical perspectives to explore: within the municipality of Ziros are a Paleolithic rock shelter and a 19th-century fortification; nearby are an ancient site and a mountain village. Rogoi Castle adds another perspective on the Preveza regional unit and is specifically located in Nea Kerasounta, by the Louros River. So not all these places are located in Gkoura itself. It helps to distinguish between places within the municipality, nearby places, and a farther-away location within the regional unit.

A Paleolithic refuge and a fortification

Asprocháliko is a rock shelter that served as a refuge for Paleolithic hunter-gatherers. It is located in the municipality of Ziros in the Preveza regional unit. This links the location to a specific early use: the focus is on a natural shelter. The Castle of the Five Wells offers a much later historical connection. This 19th-century fortification occupies a strategic location in Kleisoura, also within the municipality of Ziros. The two places represent different cultural and historical themes: the rock shelter as a refuge and the strategically located fortification.

Orraon and Gorgomylos

Orraon offers another perspective on antiquity. The site is on Kastri Hill near the village of Gorgomylos, in the Gymnotopos area on the border of the Preveza and Arta regional units. Gorgomylos itself is a mountain village in the Preveza regional unit, at an elevation of about 700 metres in the Xirovouni natural area. The two names refer to different types of place: Orraon is the ancient site on the hill, while Gorgomylos is the mountain village. The approximate elevation and natural area give the village a distinct landscape setting; Orraon’s location on the border of the regional units places it geographically.

Rogoi Castle, also known as Bouchetion Castle

Rogoi Castle is also known as Bouchetion Castle. It is situated on a 50-metre-high hill in Nea Kerasounta, in the Preveza regional unit, beside the Louros River. The second name refers to the same castle and helps identify it under either name. The 50 metres refers to the height of the hill. By comparison, the Castle of the Five Wells is notable for its strategic location in Kleisoura; for Rogoi, the hill and the Louros River are distinctive location markers.

Cultural history and landscape as distinct themes

Organising these places by theme lets you distinguish between early history, ancient locations, fortifications, and landscape. Asprocháliko represents a Paleolithic refuge, while Orraon is an ancient site. The Castle of the Five Wells is explicitly associated with the 19th century; Rogoi Castle can be identified by its alternative name and its location beside the Louros River. Gorgomylos offers a different emphasis: this mountain village in Xirovouni lies at an elevation of about 700 metres. That way, you can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests and distinguish the different places geographically.
