Sirako offers three distinct ways to experience a stay: traditional stone architecture, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God and a hiking route to Priza rated as moderately challenging. This brings architectural heritage, a cultural tradition and a specific hike together.

Stone architecture in many forms

Dressed stone walls, slate roofs and stone houses are part of Sirako’s traditional architecture, along with old stone arch bridges and cobbled lanes. This style of construction is evident in the houses, roofs and paths. Anyone interested in architecture can compare different forms: stone construction, slate roofing and the design of cobbled lanes.

Gkoura is considered an outstanding architectural structure. At the entrance to Sirako is a stone arch bridge called Pούντεα Νούαουα (Pundea Nouaoua), also known as the “new bridge.” It crosses the Tsasi stream; its paved roadway and side parapets are part of its design. The bridge offers a specific example of how stone architecture can be seen at crossing points as well as in houses.

The Square of the Statues is in the village center. Busts of Ioannis Kolettis, the first parliamentary prime minister, and the poet Zalokostas stand there. The two names point to different themes: political history and literature. The square thus adds a public memorial site featuring two clearly distinct figures to the view of buildings and bridges.

Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God

The Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, held in Sirako on August 15, is included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Dance is one of the festival’s key features. A group of musicians and singers familiar with the festival’s style and character keeps it alive. Alongside the date, dance, music and singing are therefore central to the celebration.

The historic festival venue is the Chorostasi around the plane tree. Since the late 1970s, the festival has returned to this location. This tradition offers a different way to experience Sirako than its stone buildings: here, the focus is on a cultural practice and its historic setting. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the latest dates.

A moderately challenging hiking route to Priza

A hiking route rated as moderately challenging leads from Sirako via the Chapel of the Holy Apostles to the summit of Priza. The route links a starting point in the village, a named stop along the way and a summit destination. This makes the hike a distinct activity alongside the village’s architecture and festival tradition. Different considerations come to the fore when planning: the festival is associated with August 15, while the hiking route is rated as moderately challenging. Suitable equipment is recommended for winter mountain hikes.
