Ravenia is a mountain village in the Ioannina regional unit of Epirus, at an altitude of 844 metres. Its local history spans several named locations and two distinct periods. For travellers interested in the history of a place, part of Ravenia’s particular appeal lies in viewing the relocations as successive steps: the first took place in Byzantine times, the second at the beginning of Ottoman rule. This sequence gives Ravenia’s local history its common thread.

The Byzantine relocation to Μπογδορά

During the Byzantine period, the settlement of Ravenia was moved from the area of Λαγκάδα εκλησιάς to Μπογδορά. According to tradition, geological changes prompted the move: a river in the area dried up, forcing the inhabitants to look for another source of water. The relocation therefore has two distinct aspects: movement between named areas and a traditional account linking the river’s disappearance with the search for water. To understand the move, it helps to distinguish the starting area from the destination. Λαγκάδα εκλησιάς is the area from which Ravenia was moved; Μπογδορά was the destination of this first stage. The Byzantine relocation thus forms a distinct chapter in the village’s history, before Ravenia later reached its present location.

The present location and the monastery

At the beginning of Ottoman rule, Bogdora was abandoned and Ravenia was moved to its present location. A monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God already stood there, near a spring. The monastery was therefore already associated with the new location when the settlement was moved there. This second move had a different starting point from the Byzantine one: it led from Bogdora to the present location, whereas the earlier relocation ended in Bogdora. This distinguishes three stages: Λαγκάδα εκλησιάς, Μπογδορά and the present-day village. The spring and the monastery are part of the story of this final stage.

The monastery’s historical role

From the 17th century to the end of the 19th century, the Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God was a religious centre for Christian communities from the surrounding area. This period tells a different part of the story from the relocation: the focus is now on the communities for whom the monastery held religious significance. Ravenia’s history thus brings together a change in the settlement’s location and the monastery’s role over several centuries. For travellers interested in cultural history, this offers a clear focus: the village’s past can be explored through both its development and the monastery’s religious significance.

Ravenia in its regional context

Ravenia also belongs to the group of villages known as Κατσαουνοχώρια. This affiliation adds a regional perspective to the specific history of the village. It answers a different question from the relocations: not how the settlement’s location changed, but which named group of villages Ravenia belongs to. When planning a trip, travellers who consider regional connections as well as the history of an individual place can distinguish between these two perspectives and bring them together. The relocations tell the story of Ravenia’s own development; its group affiliation places the mountain village in a wider regional context.
