Platania draws attention to the parish church of the Prophet Elijah. It stands in an amphitheatrical setting near the edge of the settlement, giving it a clear connection to the local area and a specific architectural history. Older late Byzantine architectural elements and frescoes from different periods give the church two distinct cultural-historical layers. If you would like to focus on architecture and painting during your trip, you can consider its setting, structural features and decoration as separate aspects.

Parish Church and Architectural History

As Platania’s parish church, the building is a local landmark. Its amphitheatrical setting near the edge of the settlement also describes the church’s position in relation to the village. Its setting and the historical traces in the building can be considered separately.

Some of the older architectural elements date from the late Byzantine period. They are located at the southern apse, the upper part of the main apse, the eastern wall above the two apses, and the eastern section of the southern wall. The dating therefore applies to specific parts of the building. Those interested in church architecture can view the named areas as evidence of this earlier building phase.

The paintings offer another perspective on the church’s history: its interior is decorated with frescoes by painters from Kapesovo dating from the mid-18th century, as well as newer frescoes. The paintings from different periods sit alongside the late Byzantine architectural elements. This distinction helps avoid assigning a single date to both the building’s history and its decoration.

More cultural topics in the wider Ioannina destination

In the wider Ioannina destination, the Pamvotis Lake Information Centre offers a focus on natural history. It is located on Ioannina Island in a traditional, protected stone building and presents information about the lake’s most important plants and the fish, birds, amphibians and mammals that live there. Check the centre’s operating arrangements before visiting. The island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece. Its village is designated a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates from the 16th century.

For cultural and historical topics, the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina offers a different focus. It is located within Ioannina Castle, in the southeastern acropolis of Its Kale. The museum displays silverware in the so-called Treasury in the centre of the citadel; an exhibition on the city’s history is housed in the Fethiye Mosque. The Silversmithing Museum is located in the western bastion tower of the northeastern acropolis of Ioannina Castle, Its Kale. There, visitors can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects. The city’s history, silverwork and the craft techniques used to make it can thus be considered as separate interests for a visit.

The castle itself also helps put Ioannina’s history in context: it stands on a naturally fortified rocky peninsula. The earliest traces of settlement discovered through archaeological investigations date to the Classical and Hellenistic periods; at the same time, the castle is considered one of Greece’s oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements. In the innermost part of the castle, in the Its Kale area, lies the tomb of Ali Pasha of Tepelena, one of the city’s significant historical sites. Underground caves within the citadel were once used as storehouses and prisons and can be accessed from there. Check local access conditions before planning a visit.

Another point of interest in the wider Ioannina destination is the visitor and reception centre of Perama Cave. It features audiovisual materials and rare palaeontological finds, adding a natural-history perspective to the topics of church and city history.
