Amfithea combines a lakeside habitat on Lake Pamvotida with seasonal water-skiing lessons and a historic school building. When comparing hotels for a stay in the area, it helps to first consider whether your plans focus mainly on the lakeside settlement or also on the wider destination of Ioannina.

Lakeside scenery and nature in Amfithea

Amfithea lies on the lakeshore; visitors can learn about the area's habitats, vegetation, and flora. Ioannina Island lies in the northwestern part of Lake Pamvotida, opposite the settlement of Amfithea. This location gives the village a clear connection to the lake, without overshadowing its own landscape. Those interested in plant life and habitats will find a different focus here than on a stay centered mainly on urban culture.

Water skiing with seasonal lessons

A water-skiing course operates in Amfithea. The Ski Pamvotis sports club runs a training center there, with a slalom course and a jump ramp. From April to the end of October, water-skiing lessons are offered to beginners of all ages. Check with the club in advance about availability for your preferred dates. According to tourism information, the course also hosts competitions of international standing.

The lessons and sports facilities add an active element to your stay, while the lakeshore also offers its own connection to nature. When planning, you can therefore decide whether water skiing is the main reason for your trip or whether you would also like to explore the local landscape and other destinations in the wider Ioannina area.

A historic school building in the village

The former “Koutseki” community school in Amfithea was built in 1886 and is designated a protected monument. It adds a historical note alongside the lakeside scenery and water sports. Its construction date and protected status provide a clear context for the building's place in the village's history.

Choosing accommodation

Amfithea, also known as Strouni, is two kilometers from Perama and 15 minutes from central Ioannina. Regular urban transport connections are available; check specific journey times before traveling. The distances to Perama and the city center can help you compare Amfithea with your plans for the area.

In the wider Ioannina destination

Ioannina offers other nature and cultural experiences that can complement your stay. On Ioannina Island, the Pamvotida Lake Information Center is housed in a traditional stone building designated as a protected monument. It presents the lake's main plant species and information about the fish, birds, amphibians, and mammals that live there. Check opening arrangements before visiting. The island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece. Its village is designated a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates from the 16th century. Two monasteries were founded there in Byzantine times: the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Philanthropenon, also known as Spanou, and the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Strategopoulou, also known as Diliou.

Ioannina Castle stands on a naturally fortified rocky peninsula. The earliest traces of settlement discovered through archaeological research date to the Classical and Hellenistic periods; the castle is one of Greece's oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements. Within the castle, the Byzantine Museum is located in the southeastern acropolis of Its Kale. It displays silverware in the so-called Treasury at the center of the citadel and an exhibition on the city's history in the Fethiye Mosque. The Silversmithing Museum is located in the western bastion tower of the castle's northeastern acropolis, Its Kale. Visitors can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects there.

Perama Cave is also part of the wider Ioannina destination: its visitor and reception center features audiovisual materials and rare paleontological finds. Two different routes in the region may be of interest: the established circuit around Lake Pamvotida is 30 kilometers long, and a walking and cycling path runs from Mavili Square to the village of Katsikas. These options add other experiences to your stay without replacing Amfithea's nature and water-sports activities.
