Mountain Village Between the Southern Pindus and Tzoumerka
Mesopirgos is a mountain village at the foot of the Southern Pindus in eastern Tzoumerka. Green forests, flowing waters and the high peaks of Tzoumerka surround the village. To get your bearings, it is helpful to distinguish between the location and the landscape: the foothills describe where the village lies; forests, waterways and peaks form the setting around it. When choosing a destination based on its scenery, you can consider these elements together while distinguishing the specific village location from the surrounding mountain region.
Regional Location and Orientation
Mesopirgos lies at the intersection of the four regional units of Arta, Karditsa, Aetolia-Acarnania and Evrytania. This regional context adds a second perspective to its location in eastern Tzoumerka and at the foot of the Southern Pindus. The mountain ranges describe the landscape; the four regional units identify its regional connections. Both help to place the village geographically without equating its location with the wider surrounding area.
Village Square, Church and Kamara Bridge
Seven centuries-old plane trees stand in Mesopirgos village square. At the centre is the Church of Agios Dimitrios, dated to 1894. The square and the centre provide two different spatial reference points: the trees stand in the square, while the church is located in the village centre. The date also gives the church a historical reference.
The stone Kamara Bridge, also called Kamaroula, has a single arch and spans the stream that flows through the village of the same name. In the Acheloos Valley, it is considered a cultural heritage monument and a landmark. The bridge is 34 metres long, its arch opening measures 22 metres, and its width is 2.50 metres. These measurements describe different dimensions: the arch opening is not the same as the overall length, and the width is a separate measurement. Kamara Bridge and Kamaroula refer to the same structure; its material, arch form and measurements each describe a different aspect of its design.
Historic Sites on the Hill
On the hill above Mesopirgos are a former monastery of Panagia and a small ancient fortification. Their location connects the two sites spatially, while their historical classifications distinguish them: the monastery is former, and the fortification is ancient. The Kanalia mountain refuge is also located in Mesopirgos. The area around the village thus brings buildings and historic sites together with a distinct connection to the mountain region.
Choosing a Destination and Accommodation
Two main considerations come together when choosing where to visit: the mountain landscape of forests, waterways and peaks, and the area's built and local history, from the church and Kamara Bridge to the sites above the village. When looking for a holiday apartment in Mesopirgos, you can first decide which of these aspects you would like to shape your trip most. The regional location and local features offer different points of reference to help you decide.
