In Iasmos, historical points of interest can be distinguished between those in the town and destinations in the surrounding area. The folklore museum and the Church of Saint John the Baptist are part of the town’s history. North of the town lies the rocky natural area of Thracian Meteora; the stone bridge over the Kompsatos is located between Iasmos and Polyanthos. This gives you two distinct focuses when planning your trip: cultural history in Iasmos itself, and landscape and architectural history in the surrounding area.

Cultural History and Events

The Iasmos Folklore Museum grew out of a community collecting initiative. It began in 1983 at the initiative of the Iasmos Cultural Association, with support from local residents. The museum began operating in 2012 and opened on 8 July. The 1983 initiative and the museum’s operation from 2012 mark two distinct stages: first, community collecting, and later, the museum as an institution.

Another historical point of interest in the town is the Church of Saint John the Baptist. It dates from the 18th century, predating the museum collecting initiative of 1983.

The Iasmos Cultural Association organizes numerous music and dance events, concerts, theatrical performances and revivals of traditional customs every year. In July, it holds celebrations in honour of the Prophet Elias; these are part of a recurring cultural tradition. The association’s program returns each year, while the celebrations for Prophet Elias take place in July. If you would like to plan your stay around these celebrations, check the specific event dates in advance.

Historical and Scenic Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The stone bridge dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and is located on the Kompsatos River between Iasmos and Polyanthos. Unlike the church in town, it is in the surrounding area. Their dates nevertheless overlap: the bridge dates back to the 18th century, as does the Church of Saint John the Baptist. The two structures therefore share a historical period, even though they are located in different places.

Thracian Meteora is a rocky natural area north of Iasmos, between the abandoned settlements of Astraia, Polyarnon and Efthymo. The bridge and the rocky area appeal to different interests: at the bridge, the historic structure and the river take centre stage, while at Thracian Meteora, the focus is on the rocky landscape and its connection to three abandoned settlements. This lets you explore the surrounding area from the perspective of either architectural history or the natural environment.
