Evros reveals itself through striking contrasts: wetlands and birdlife in the delta, silk craftsmanship in Soufli, and Byzantine and archaeological history at other sites. The regional unit lies in northeastern Greece; Bulgaria forms its natural border to the north, and Turkey to the east. If you want to plan your trip around a particular interest, there are very different themes to choose from—from natural landscapes to cultural history.

Delta and forest: two nature experiences

The Evros Delta is a wetland of international importance recognized under the Ramsar Convention. A total of 304 bird species have been recorded there. The delta’s ecotourism program is aimed at individual visitors, groups, schools, birdwatchers, photographers and students. Check the program’s practical details before your trip.

Another natural attraction is Dadia Forest, one of the protected natural areas of Evros under Natura 2000. Its birds of prey are considered the feature that makes it especially distinctive and unique in Europe. The two experiences are clearly different: the delta focuses on wetlands and recorded species, while Dadia is known for the forest’s birds of prey.

The history of silk in Soufli

In Soufli, in the Evros prefecture, the Silk Museum is housed in the Kourtidis Mansion. Its permanent exhibition presents every stage of pre-industrial silkworm farming and silk production. The focus is therefore on the production process, not just finished silk fabrics. The visitor program includes demonstrations of traditional silk reeling, weaving on a traditional loom, and dyeing silk fabrics with plant-based materials. The demonstration program may vary; check in advance which demonstrations are scheduled.

Byzantine heritage and archaeology

In Feres, the Monastery of Panagia Kosmosoteira is considered one of Greece’s most important Byzantine monuments. It was probably founded in 1152 by Emperor Isaac Komnenos at the site of Vira. This account of its founding thus links a specific historical name and place with a cautiously stated date.

The regional unit of Evros also includes Samothrace. The Archaeological Museum of Samothrace displays exhibits from various archaeological sites on the island, dating from the Middle Neolithic period to modern times. The Sanctuary of the Great Gods is the museum’s main focus. Here, a clearly defined theme spans a long period—a different approach to cultural history from the Byzantine monastery in Feres.

Keep transport connections in mind

Evros is connected by rail to Athens, Thessaloniki and Bulgaria. Check current train connections before your trip. Intercity KTEL buses connect Soufli with Alexandroupoli, Komotini and nearby towns; timetables may change, so it is a good idea to check current departures before travelling.
