Pigianos Kampos is a large coastal area approximately three kilometres long and two kilometres wide. This fertile area includes fields growing horticultural produce and cereals, as well as olive groves. There are sandy beaches along the coast; Pigianos Kampos beach is wide and sandy, with clear water. Distinctive stone breakwaters extend into the sea in places. The area thus combines an agricultural character with a coastal destination.
Sandy beaches, coves and activities on the water
The broad sandy beach and rocky coves offer different types of coastline. There are organised sections along the beach with parasols and sun loungers. This may change; if these facilities are important for your stay, check the current situation before your visit. You can also swim in the rocky coves.
Water sports centres operate in the beach area, offering a range of activities. The specific offerings from operators may change. If you are planning a particular water sports activity, it is best to confirm what is currently available before your visit. This will help you plan around whether you would prefer to focus on the sandy beach, swimming in a rocky cove or a water sports activity.
The 2026 Blue Flag list includes two separate entries: “Pigianos Kampos/Amira Luxury Resort” and “Pigianos Kampos/Grecotel LUXME White”.
Culture in the wider destination of Rethymno
The history of Rethymno’s old town also offers a distinct cultural highlight in the wider destination of Rethymno. It is designated as a protected historic monument and a traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later altered under Turkish rule. The historic town centre lies below the Venetian fortress of Fortezza.
Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the main entrance to the Fortezza. Its exhibits present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The time span covered by the museum’s exhibits thus extends far beyond the Venetian and Turkish influences on the old town, offering a different perspective on regional history.
Another insight into cultural history can be found at the Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno. It is housed in a Venetian mansion dating from the 17th century. Five rooms in the permanent exhibition display traditional crafts and folk art. The historic building’s architecture and the everyday culture on display offer different points of focus.
The annual cultural calendar in Rethymno also includes the Renaissance Festival, held every summer with music, theatre and dance performances, as well as art exhibitions. If the festival is relevant to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.
