Erfoi first draws attention to the Church of Agios Ioannis; for other cultural and event-related topics, Rethymno provides a separate framework as the broader travel destination.

Church of Agios Ioannis in Erfoi

The Church of Agios Ioannis is a landmark in Erfoi. It is adorned with high-quality 14th-century frescoes; the paintings are academic in character and belong to the tradition of Constantinople. The combination of their dating and art-historical context makes the church a specific point of interest for travellers interested in religious painting. If you wish to visit the interior, it is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible.

The regional road cycling route

A 2014 route guide describes the 53-km Platanias–Arkadi–Eleftherna road cycling route, which branches off towards Erfoi. The route runs from tourist-oriented Platanias through several villages, climbing to the historic Arkadi Monastery and continuing towards the villages of Eleftherna and Ancient Eleftherna. Parts of the ancient city have been excavated near these two places. Further along, the route descends towards Margarites; it briefly joins the Old National Road and then branches off towards Alfa, Erfoi and Viranepiskopi. Near Viranepiskopi, it joins the road again and returns to Rethymno via Stavromenos. As the guide dates from 2014, check the current route and conditions before setting out.

Culture in the broader travel destination of Rethymno

The Old Town of Rethymno is designated a protected historic monument and traditional settlement. Its urban layout took shape during the Venetian period and was later altered during Ottoman rule; the historic town centre lies below the Venetian Fortezza. Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum has been housed in a pentagonal building in front of the Fortezza’s main entrance. Its exhibitions present the history of the prefecture from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno offers a different focus: it is housed in a 17th-century Venetian mansion, and five rooms in its permanent exhibition display traditional crafts and folk art.

The broader travel destination of Rethymno also offers archaeological attractions. The Museum of the Archaeological Site of Eleftherna is the first archaeological site museum in Crete. Its exhibitions show life in ancient Eleftherna from the late part of the 4th millennium BC to the Byzantine period. The Armeni necropolis offers a different chronological and subject-matter perspective: more than 220 Late Minoan tombs have been excavated there. These were family tombs containing several deceased people; the grave goods provide insights into the art, religion and social organisation of the period.

Events may also influence your choice of travel dates. The Rethymno Renaissance Festival takes place every summer and includes music, theatre and dance performances, as well as art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival is a traditional annual event; the parade is organised by volunteers. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the relevant dates before planning.
