Kroussonas combines a recurring village event with historical themes, local food production and the surrounding landscape. In the village itself, the churches of Saint George and the Holy Trinity, as well as the women’s cooperative «Η Κρουσανιώτισσα», represent different aspects of the destination. Outside the village, the Krousónas Gorge and Koupos Hill help you get your bearings. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between attractions in the village and destinations in the nearby area.
An annual event in September
The Krousónas Apple Festival takes place every September in the village’s central square, πλατεία Αγίας Τριάδας. It offers a recurring seasonal reason to choose when to travel. The September event provides a different focus from the historical and landscape-related attractions that also shape Kroussonas and its surroundings. If you are travelling to attend the festival, check the specific event date in advance.
Landscape and archaeology outside the village
The Krousónas Gorge, also known as φαράγγι της Γαϊδουροράχης, lies about three kilometres west of Krousónas and therefore outside the village. Small waterfalls form in some places. The approximate distance and western direction help you get your bearings.
Koupos Hill, south of Krousónas, is considered particularly interesting from an archaeological perspective. There, in 1906, archaeologist Stefanos Xanthoudidis discovered the remains of walls from a large settlement dating to the Mycenaean or Geometric period, as well as buildings and numerous objects. The year 1906 and the possible dating to the Mycenaean or Geometric period refer to two different things: Xanthoudidis’s discovery and the period of the settlement. Together with the gorge to the west, they create a clear spatial and thematic distinction: landscape and small waterfalls in the west, archaeological traces on the southern hill.
Culture and local cuisine
In the village itself, the churches of Saint George and the Holy Trinity are considered historically and archaeologically interesting. Another cultural attraction is the traditional musical instrument museum «ΘΥΡΑΘΕΝ»: it was founded in 2012 and based in the historic village of Krousónas. In December 2023, a new public location for the museum opened in central Heraklion. Thus, the museum’s founding history and its later public location relate to different places.
The women’s cooperative «Η Κρουσανιώτισσα» in Krousónas prepares sweets and dishes using traditional recipes, with local produce as their main ingredients. For travellers who consider local cuisine alongside culture and landscape when choosing a destination, this provides a specific culinary connection to the village. The traditional recipes and local ingredients offer a different focus from the churches and archaeological traces.
