Xirosterni is a semi-mountainous village at an elevation of 255 metres between Vamos and Kefalas. The village brings together several points of interest for travellers: a hiking trail considered short and manageable for almost everyone, a historic olive press, the musical history of lyra player Charilaos Piperakis, and hands-on activities at Cretan Gea. Nature, local history and trying things for yourself offer different ways to shape your stay.
Hiking around Xirosterni
The Chania Trails APO 07 hiking trail runs from Xirosterni, Souri and Sellia to Roupakias Forest. It is considered short and manageable for almost everyone. This makes it a practical option if you would like to include a hike in your stay. Unlike the hands-on activities at Cretan Gea, the focus here is on the trail itself. In the area around Xirosterni, the forest is home to oaks, cypresses, kermes oaks, carob trees and other trees. Seasonal natural features are also part of the experience; which ones you encounter depends on when you visit. The route and nature-watching are therefore two distinct things to consider when planning: the hiking trail has a named destination, while seasonal features may vary depending on the time of your visit.
Olive oil production and musical history
Another olive press stands beside the press in the Mastorakis family home. It dates from the 19th century and belongs to the Galanakis family. From a cultural and historical perspective, it is a different point of interest from the Piperakis monument: one relates to olive oil production and a family association, the other to a musician and his biography.
Charilaos Piperakis, who was born in Xirosterni, was a lyra player. In 1911, he emigrated to the United States, where he spread Cretan music among Greek emigrants and other listeners. A simple monument to him stands at the southwestern entrance to the village. His biography connects Xirosterni with his musical activities in the United States; the monument at the village entrance commemorates the musician. His emigration and the memorial to him in the village are thus two distinct aspects of his story.
Hands-on activities and an annual festival
Cretan Gea offers a hands-on cooking workshop in Xirosterni, where traditional recipes are prepared and cooked. It is also possible to make ceramics there. The activities have different focuses: the cooking workshop centres on traditional recipes, while the ceramics activity involves making pieces. This distinction may help you choose if you are looking for a culinary or a craft activity. Check directly with Cretan Gea for current arrangements.
Every year on 6 August, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour takes place in the schoolyard in Xirosterni. The festival is therefore tied to the same calendar date every year; check current arrangements for the hands-on activities directly with the provider. If the festival is an important reason for your trip, confirm the date in advance. This will help you distinguish between the fixed festival date and the workshop arrangements, which need to be checked separately, when planning your schedule.
