Sougia brings together different reasons to visit: a beach with a distinctive eastern section, the Early Byzantine Basilica A, and the circuit trail and path to Lissos. When deciding, it matters not only whether you are looking for a beach, culture or activity, but also which specific details are important for your stay.

Beach: a distinctive eastern section

The eastern part of Sougia beach is undeveloped and preferred by naturists and nudists; however, nudity is not compulsory there.

Culture: Basilica A and its mosaics

Basilica A is located on the western edge of the coastal settlement of Sougia and dates to the mid-6th century AD. It had three aisles; the narthex was as wide as the basilica. The narthex is the entrance hall of a church, while a three-aisled layout describes an interior divided into three longitudinal sections. The terms explain different parts of the floor plan and help place Basilica A in space. The dating provides the historical context; the narthex and three-aisled layout, by contrast, describe the spatial organization. Thus, chronology and floor plan stand alongside each other as two distinct ways of understanding Basilica A.

The mosaic floors are preserved in the central aisle and the narthex. They feature elaborate geometric patterns as well as scenes with deer and ivy, peacocks facing one another, and a vase with a stalk between them. Geometric ornaments thus sit alongside animal and plant motifs; the imagery adds specific details to the architectural description.

On the move: circuit trail and path to Lissos

Despite its small elevation changes, the almost 2 km circuit trail from Sougia is not rated as easy. The small elevation gain alone is therefore not enough to understand why it is not rated as easy; take the stated difficulty into account when planning.

The path to Lissos starts right beside Sougia harbor and takes about 90 minutes each way. This means an approximate walking time of three hours for the round trip; breaks are additional. Conditions may vary.

Cretan cuisine as another highlight

A restaurant in Sougia serves traditional Cretan dishes featuring local fish and meat; some of these dishes are hard to find elsewhere. The menu may change. This is an additional culinary consideration when choosing where to stay, alongside the beach, mosaics and trails. If food is one of your travel interests, this local option is something you can take into account when planning. As the menu may change, ask in advance if you have a particular dish in mind.
