Melissourgeio brings together a hiking route with sweeping sea views and local history centred on a shared well and the Four New Martyrs. These topics appeal to different interests: a hike over Korfí, church history and the village’s former use of water. This lets you shape your travel plans around either the landscape or the history, without making one the sole focus.

Hiking trail over KorfĂ

A hiking trail leads from Kamara to Melissourgeio via the Korfí hilltop and offers sweeping sea views from Kissamos to Chania. Kamara is the starting point, Korfí lies along the way, and Melissourgeio is the destination. The route, intermediate point and destination are therefore clearly identified; the view from Kissamos to Chania gives the hike a striking landscape setting. If you’re considering a hike as part of your trip, you’ll find a specific route here with sweeping sea views. Check the current condition of the trail before setting out.

The Four New Martyrs

The Four New Martyrs were not listed in the church’s calendar of saints until 1991. That year, Emmanuel Tzanidakis published the text of the judgment concerning their martyrdom, together with a short commentary. In 2003, a church dedicated to the Four New Martyrs was consecrated in Melissourgeio. The two dates mark different milestones: 1991 is the year the text was published, while 2003 marks the consecration of the church.

The text of the judgment and the church refer to the same Four New Martyrs, but in different ways: one through a written account of their martyrdom, the other through a church dedicated to them. Those interested in church history can place the events in chronological order without treating the publication and the consecration as a single event. Each date provides a separate point of reference in the history of the Four New Martyrs.

The shared well

The shared well of Kamara and Melissourgeio is an important local monument. Its water flowed from three springs and met the village’s needs for water supply and irrigation. The springs dried up in 1960. The well therefore represents not only a monument, but also a former shared resource with two specific purposes: water supply and irrigation. The drying up of the springs provides a date that anchors this history.

Putting the hike and local history in context

Kamara and Melissourgeio appear in two different contexts: as the starting point and destination of the hike, and as the places associated with the shared well. The names therefore have different roles, even though they appear in both topics. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: the hiking route offers a connection to the landscape, the well points to former water use, and the church and text of the judgment lead to the history of the Four New Martyrs. A hike with sea views and different ways of exploring local history sit side by side here.
