Impros is a small mountain village on the plateau of the same name at the foot of the Lefka Ori. Two busts in the village commemorate Georgios Xenoudakis; the Imbros Gorge lies nearby. Another landmark is the mountain road, which begins beside the Church of Agios Konstantinos and leads to the abandoned village of Kaloi Lakki. The village landmarks, gorge and road route are three distinct points of reference.

A Mountain Village on the Plateau

Impros lies on the plateau of the same name, 780 m above sea level, at the foot of the Lefka Ori and on the road from Askifou to Chora Sfakion. The plateau, elevation and mountain edge describe different aspects of its location: the plateau identifies the site, the elevation its height, and the Lefka Ori its connection to the mountains. This places the mountain village in the context of specific geographical features.

Memorials in the Village

Two busts in Impros commemorate Georgios Xenoudakis. One stands on the school grounds beside his grave; the other is prominently placed in Agios Konstantinos Square. The busts mark two different locations: the first is associated with the grave, the second with the square. They are distinct landmarks for finding your way around the village, although both busts are dedicated to the same person.

Imbros Gorge: Route and Landscape

Imbros Gorge lies near Impros; its entrance is just beyond the village. The short, easily walkable crossing is a two-hour hike that ends in the village of Komitades. The route described is therefore a crossing that ends at a different starting point, not a loop back to the entrance.

In several places, the rock walls reach a height of 300 m, while the gorge is only 2 m wide there. Comparing height and width gives a concrete sense of the narrow passages. The landscape also features clusters of trees, geological formations and viewpoints. The rock measurements offer a different perspective on the gorge than its trees and geological formations; together, these features describe both its shape and landscape.

The gorge is 8 km long; the route is 11 km long. The two-hour crossing is stated in the municipal description. Read the kilometre figures alongside their respective route descriptions rather than combining them into a single route length.

The Mountain Road to Kaloi Lakki

A different route starts beside the Church of Agios Konstantinos: the mountain road leads to the abandoned village of Kaloi Lakki after 10 km. Its description differs from that of Imbros Gorge: there, a two-hour crossing and its end point in Komitades are specified; here, the focus is on the mountain road, its length and Kaloi Lakki as its destination. To compare them, consider two questions: How long is the hike described, and where does the mountain road lead?
