Falassarna combines a long coastline with the history of ancient Phalasarna. Its archaeological site lies at the northern end of the beach; the beach itself stretches for about three kilometres from one end to the other. The coast, nature and history offer different points of interest to help you decide whether Falassarna suits your travel interests.

Beach and Coastline Length

Pachia Ammos is the best-known stretch of Falassarna Beach. The wide sandy beach is about one kilometre long and includes Bourouni, Avoratias and Gulisma. The two length figures therefore refer to different scales: around three kilometres for the beach from one end to the other, and about one kilometre for Pachia Ammos. When comparing information about the coast, this distinction helps you avoid treating the entire beach and its best-known stretch as one and the same.

Ancient Phalasarna

The archaeological site at the northern end of the beach belongs to ancient Phalasarna. Dorians founded the city around the 7th century BC at Cape Koutri on the Gramvousa Peninsula, in the westernmost part of Crete. In the 4th century BC, the “closed harbour” was carved out of a lagoon and surrounded by quays and defensive towers. The harbour was considered one of Crete’s most important. The city’s founding and the development of its harbour therefore belong to different periods in the site’s history.

The Acropolis of Phalasarna also has a special connection to the landscape: an ancient temple of Demeter stood there in a natural cave that later collapsed. Rescue excavations began in 1966, revealing numerous tombs and yielding hundreds of finds. Finds are now displayed in the museums of Kisamos and Chania. Phalasarna’s history can thus be understood not only through its harbour, but also through its religious architecture and archaeological finds.

Nature and Beach Conditions

Falassarna is part of the Natura 2000 network because of its diverse flora and fauna and outstanding natural beauty. Its natural values are a separate reason to consider Falassarna as part of your travel plans, alongside its long beach and archaeological site. These three themes offer different points of interest: coastal scenery, nature and ancient history.

Windsurfing is particularly suited to conditions with stronger winds and successive waves.

Church and Feast Day

The Church of Saint Fanourios is located at the harbour of Falassarna. Its feast is celebrated every year on 27 August with food and music. If you would like to plan your stay around the feast day, check this year’s event details in advance. This lets you consider the date as a possible occasion without assuming the celebrations are guaranteed to take place as planned.
