At Angelochori Beach is the harbor, where coastal fishing boats are moored; their presence may vary. From the beach, you can see Thessaloniki and Mount Olympus. If you are considering Angelochori as a place to stay, you can distinguish between two main attractions: the beach and harbor in the village, and the nearby lagoon.
Beach and Lagoon: Two Distinct Attractions
The Angelochori Lagoon lies about 1 kilometer southwest of the village. It covers 3,772 acres and is roughly square in shape. Two hundred bird species have been observed in the protected area. Ten different habitat types account for 11.2 percent of the habitat types found in Greece. The number of birds reflects an observation result; the number of habitat types describes a different aspect of the lagoon landscape.
The vegetation around the saltworks is also part of this natural landscape: reeds, broom, rushes and asphodels grow in the ditch around the saltworks. The lagoon is therefore notable both for bird observations and for its variety of habitats and plants. If you would like to include nature in your travel plans, this offers a distinct attraction alongside the beach and harbor.
Salt Production Around the Lagoon
A saltworks in the northern part of the Angelochori Lagoon has been operating and producing salt since at least 1902. Saltworks operated by HELLENIC SALTS S.A. are also located near the lagoon; their total annual production is stated as 4,000 tons of salt. Salt production adds an industrial aspect to the area's natural attractions. When choosing what interests you, you can distinguish the lagoon as a habitat from the saltworks as places of salt production.
Beach, Water Sports and Coves
You can swim along the adjacent coast; the climatic conditions are favorable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Businesses in the Angelochori area offer water sports services and rent the necessary equipment. Since the availability of providers can change, check specific offerings before your trip.
Some small coves along the coast toward Thessaloniki are accessible by car; access conditions may vary. This is another way to explore the coast, in addition to Angelochori Beach itself. If you plan to visit a particular cove, check access in advance.
Lighthouse and Fortification History
The Angelochori Lighthouse joined the Greek lighthouse network in 1913. During the German occupation, it was converted into a machine-gun position because of its strategic location. The fortifications are also part of this history: one of the five concrete gun emplacements built there remains today. These details trace the transition from the lighthouse's historic operation to its later military use and the surviving traces of the fortifications.
Summer Evenings and Local Taverns
Musical and other artistic events are held on summer evenings at the House of the Keeper of Aliki. If you would like to include an event in your plans, check the dates in advance. Local taverns serve seafood and other dishes; before visiting a specific one, check which ones are open. This lets you prioritize the beach, nature watching, history and food according to your interests, without expecting all the attractions to be in the same part of the destination.
