A fountain with a dated inscription, two industrial buildings dating from around 1900, and a Cycladic marble kouros give Kilkis several points of historical interest. Kilkis Cave and Agios Georgios Hill, with views over the city and plain, add to the picture.

Museums, Finds and Architectural History

The Archaeological Museum of Kilkis is located in the city center. Its finds come from the surrounding area and span the period from prehistoric times to the Roman era. A notable object is the Kouros of Europe, made of Cycladic marble; it is considered the only kouros found in northern Greece. The collection thus spans a broad period, while the kouros provides a distinct focal point.

Since 2010, the Folklore Museum of Kilkis has been housed in the restored building of the former “Old Gymnasium” at 2 Tsounta Street. The neoclassical building initially housed a Bulgarian primary school. After liberation, it served as a Greek school and girls’ gymnasium until 1980. Through mementos and everyday objects, the museum’s collection offers insight into the traditions, occupations, habits and customs of earlier times in the Kilkis area. The history of the building and the everyday culture of the region thus meet here.

The Salats Fountain also connects a specific place with a historical dedication: the inscription identifies it as a charitable work by Zeynep Hanım, dated 1199 AH, corresponding to 1784–1785. A different perspective is offered by the Twin Tobacco Warehouses of Agko Popov. These are two identical industrial buildings dating from around 1900. At the fountain, the focus is on the dedication preserved in the inscription; at the warehouses, on the striking paired form of two similar buildings.

Cave, Hill and Dates

Kilkis Cave extends across two levels, each more than 1,000 meters long. Bones and information panels about Kilkis Cave are displayed in a specially designated room. If this display is important to your visit, check its current arrangement in advance. This makes it possible to consider the cave’s scale and the accompanying information as two distinct aspects of the site.

Agios Georgios Hill offers panoramic views of the city of Kilkis and the Kilkis plain. The hill is also used for hiking, running and cycling. Views and outdoor activities are two different considerations you can take into account when planning, without assuming a fixed itinerary.

The annual Kilkis Trade Fair begins on the first Wednesday in September and lasts five days. Its start is therefore tied to a day of the week rather than a fixed date in the month. To plan around the fair, check the calendar for the relevant year; its duration remains five days.
