Doïráni brings together natural history and the past: the town’s natural history museum displays plants, birds and maps of the wetlands, while the nearby Commonwealth military cemetery provides a historic point of interest. The Kilkis destination also offers other landscapes and a lakeside path. When choosing suitable accommodation, you can consider whether natural history, remembrance or regional nature experiences will shape your stay.

Natural history in town

The Doïráni Natural History Museum displays plants, birds and maps of the wetlands. The exhibition thus combines natural history topics with a cartographic perspective on the wetlands. For travellers interested in plant life, birds and landscapes, it offers a clearly defined focus in the town.

A nearby place of remembrance

The Doïráni Commonwealth War Cemetery is located nearby and was designed by British architect Sir Robert Lorimer. Most burials took place after the battles in April and May 1917 and after the battle of 18–19 September 1918. The majority are Commonwealth burials; there is also the grave of a French soldier and the graves of 45 Greek soldiers. The cemetery adds a historical focus to the town’s natural history themes, with both its design and burial history providing points of interest.

Nature and trails in the Kilkis destination

The Doirani Lake lies within the Kilkis destination. This wetland provides a habitat or stopover for numerous resident and migratory birds. Dense reeds and lakeside vegetation characterise the lake. Alongside the museum’s natural history topics, birdlife and lakeside vegetation thus offer further aspects of the regional landscape.

Visitors can follow the lakeside path from the town of Doirani to the Forest of a Thousand Trees. The Mouries Forest, also known as the Forest of a Thousand Trees, is designated a natural monument and covers 590 stremmata. The trail offers a different focus from a museum visit: it leads from the town to a forest described by its designation and area.

Pikrolimni is also part of the Kilkis destination. This shallow lake lies beside the village of the same name and usually dries up in summer. Its clay soil contains sulfur compounds and nitrates, and is said to have healing and cosmetic properties. While Doirani Lake provides a habitat or stopover for numerous resident and migratory birds, Pikrolimni offers a different connection with nature through its summer drying and the composition of its clay soil.

Another museum visit

The Doirani Lake Museum is also located in the Kilkis destination. It is open daily from 08:00 to 14:00 for visits and tours by school groups, and is also open to residents and visitors of the municipality. Check the opening hours before you travel if you plan to visit.
