Rodochori is a mountain village on Vermio, at an altitude of about 540 metres, set in a green landscape. Its strong Pontic heritage and local festival traditions give the village a distinctive cultural identity. Seasonal fruit purchases and the nearby 3-5 Pigadia ski resort are also specific reasons to visit. Culture, local produce, and winter sports therefore offer different options to choose from.
Pontic History and the Monastery
Rodochori's Pontic heritage dates back to the settlement of refugees from Pontus. The Monastery of Saint Georgios Peristereota is a local religious landmark. It is located in Rodochori, at the foot of Vermio, on a 200-stremma site. Every year on the feast day of Saint Georgios, pilgrims from all over Greece flock to the monastery, which takes on a festive character at that time. The history of the settlement and the annual pilgrimage tradition are two distinct aspects of the village's cultural identity: one explains its Pontic heritage, while the other is tied to a recurring religious date. If you plan to visit for the celebration, check the specific date of the feast in advance.
Cherries, Apples, and the Cherry Festival
Rodochori is known for its cherries and apples. During the harvest season, you can buy fruit directly from the orchards; these purchases are seasonal. Every year in early July, the cultural association “Πολιτιστικός Σύλλογος Ροδοχωρίου Οι Κομνηνοί” holds the Cherry Festival in Rodochori. The festival and orchard sales offer two different opportunities to connect local produce with your trip: the festival takes place in early July, while direct purchases are tied to the harvest season. If you would like to take both into account, check the dates for each during the relevant season. There are also two small workshops that make traditional products from regional ingredients: the workshops of Smaro and κυρά-Παρέσσα. They add another focus on local production to the orchards.
A Trip to the 3-5 Pigadia Ski Resort
The nearby 3-5 Pigadia ski resort is an easy excursion from Rodochori and is also one of the two major ski centres in Imathia. The resort has ten ski runs for all categories of skiers. Beginners can use a Magic Carpet-type children’s lift; the facilities also include a two-seat chairlift and four drag lifts. A dedicated sledding area is provided for young visitors and children. The availability of ski runs may vary depending on conditions and operations. Check the ski resort’s current operating status before your trip.
Choose When to Visit
The best time to visit depends on what matters most to you: the Cherry Festival in early July, the pilgrimage tradition on the feast day of Saint Georgios, or an outing for skiing and sledding. These options follow different schedules. Plan your trip around your preferred focus and check the relevant festival dates or the current operating status of the facilities. This allows you to consider local cultural events and winter sports as separate reasons to visit.
