Koryfi was one of the villages that made up the historic region of Roumlouki. Its cultural connections therefore extend beyond the village itself: traditional women’s clothing is associated with around fifty villages in Roumlouki, including Koryfi. At the same time, some events refer directly to the village—for example, the Pie Festival, a church celebration and the historic photograph of sheep shearing. If you are looking for regional cultural history when choosing a destination, Koryfi offers several different perspectives: regional clothing, work, a festival and a church celebration. These topics can be considered separately and together provide a clear cultural focus for the village.

Regional clothing in Roumlouki

In the around fifty villages of Roumlouki, traditional women’s clothing is considered a remnant of military attire; Koryfi is one of these villages. A distinctive feature is the headpiece known as the Katsouli, made from three scarves and representing an ancient helmet. There are two layers here: the clothing as a whole is viewed in a historical context, while the Katsouli refers to the specific form and interpretation of the headpiece. If you are interested in regional clothing, the Katsouli offers a particularly vivid way to understand the tradition. The three scarves and helmet shape describe its characteristic element; at the same time, women’s clothing remains part of a regional context and is not associated with Koryfi alone. This distinction helps you see the village both as part of Roumlouki and in terms of its own local connections.

Sheep shearing as a historic connection to the village

A photograph from 1960 documents sheep shearing in Koryfi. It brings a different aspect to the fore than the clothing tradition: here, the focus is not on part of a garment but on a specific kind of work. This adds a historical working activity to the cultural perspective on the village. This makes a difference when choosing what interests you: if you mainly want to understand regional dress, you can start with the Katsouli; if you are interested in another side of the village’s history, sheep shearing offers a distinct topic. Clothing and shearing are two different, specifically named perspectives on Koryfi.

The Pie Festival in 2010 and 2013

In 2010, the Koryfi Cultural Association held the Pie Festival for the second year in a row. On 1 June 2013, the Pie Festival took place in Koryfi’s village square. Dance groups from the cultural association performed; Karagiozis performer Nektarios also took part. The two years mark different aspects of the festival: in 2010, it was held for the second year in a row; for 2013, the date, location and participants are specified. If you would like to plan a trip around a festival, check the dates for your intended travel period.

Vespers and an icon procession

On 25 July 2024, Vespers and a procession with the icon took place at the Church of Saint Paraskevi in Koryfi. This church occasion is clearly different from the Pie Festival: it combines Vespers and an icon procession, while the festival in the village square featured dance groups and Karagiozis. If you would like to plan a trip around a specific festival or church event, check the dates for your intended travel period.
