A short loop around a lake, a hike through dense forests, and ancient mosaics show how varied a trip to Chalkidiki can be. If youāre looking for hotels in Chalkidiki, you can first consider whether nature, activity, water sports, or culture will shape your stay. Regional highlights include both the Agios Mamas Lagoon and the ancient city of Olynthos and Stagira.
Nature and landscapes in all their variety
Pink flamingos and protected bird species live in the Agios Mamas Lagoon. Three rare species of freshwater turtles find refuge in Lake Mavrobara near Polychrono. Birds and turtles thus stand out as distinct natural highlights. Glarokavos Lagoon offers a different kind of landscape: it is a natural harbor with a sandy beach and dense shade from the surrounding pine trees.
Mount Holomontas also shapes the landscape: it defines central and northern Chalkidiki and reaches an elevation of 1,165 meters. The regionās scale is reflected in its approximately 550 kilometers of coastline and around 1,000 different beaches. Ammouliani is the regionās only permanently inhabited island.
Hiking trails, cycling routes, and water sports
The loop around Lake Mavrobara near Polychrono is short and suitable for families. A longer hiking option is the route from Sani to Siviri in Kassandra: it is about 20 kilometers long and passes through dense forests. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike. When visiting ancient Stagira, the coastal path can also be part of the experience.
For eastern Chalkidiki, a municipal website dated December 24, 2025, lists dozens of signposted and mapped cycling routes through mountain and coastal areas. Since route conditions can change, check them before setting out on a cycling trip. Canoeing is available at almost all organized beaches in Chalkidiki. Organized sports centers also offer water skiing and windsurfing lessons; specific providers and conditions may vary.
Ancient sites and Aristotle
The ancient city of Olynthos lies on the coast of the Gulf of Torone on Chalkidiki. It is home to some of the oldest known figural mosaic floors in the ancient Greek world. Olynthos was also the most important city in Halkidiki for 100 years.
Stagira was the birthplace of the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 BCā322 BC) and was founded in 655 BC as a colony of Andros. After Aristotleās death, his fellow citizens brought his body to Stagira, where he was buried with great honors. Aristotle was declared the cityās āfounder,ā and an altar was erected on his tomb. Aristotleās Park is a theme park in Stagira with views of the Gulf of Ierissos and the entire Athos Peninsula. Its attractions include instruments that demonstrate natural phenomena when used correctly, as well as interactive games.
Aristotleās Grove features interactive experimental devices based on the laws of nature described in Aristotleās work āPhysics.ā On Chalkidiki, Aristotle can thus be encountered both in the history of Stagira and in a playful, science-themed setting.
