Armour, art, medieval architecture, parkland and a market with a wide variety of food: Leeds offers several different ways to plan a trip. You can shape your stay around particular themes, such as collections, architecture or time spent outdoors. Those interested in art and history will find specific places to visit, as will travellers who want to explore the outdoors or sample regional food.

Museums with a range of focuses

The Royal Armouries Museum is the national museum of arms and armour. Its exhibits include Japanese samurai armour and swords, famous film props and Henry VIII’s armour. A large suit of armour for an Indian war elephant is also part of the collection. Live shows and combat demonstrations take place daily, combining a look at the collection with a programme of demonstrations.

Leeds Art Gallery offers a different focus: its galleries feature a permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Its Artspace is a relaxed, family-friendly creative area with art materials and activities inspired by themes from the collections. At Leeds Industrial Museum, meanwhile, spinning wheels and looms tell the story of textile production and can be seen in the textile galleries. The museum is also known by its former name, Armley Mills. Those interested in the history of modern medicine will find eleven permanent galleries about it at Thackray Museum of Medicine. Together, the different museums cover art, textiles, medicine, and the history of arms and armour.

Architecture and history

Leeds Corn Exchange was built between 1861 and 1863 to designs by the architect Cuthbert Brodrick. Kirkstall Abbey offers a very different way to explore architectural history: it is one of the most complete surviving examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in Britain. The abbey stands in parkland on the banks of the River Aire, surrounded by wildlife and green vegetation.

Temple Newsam House is also well worth visiting as a focus in its own right. More than 40 well-preserved rooms display art and design and tell stories. The buildings and sites each offer a different focus, from 19th-century architecture and a medieval abbey to art and design in interior spaces. You can choose what to visit based on the kind of history that interests you most.

Walks, parks and wildlife

The Leeds canal walk is a four-kilometre stroll along the Aire & Calder Navigation. Check the route details before setting out. As an alternative for outdoor activities on nature trails, Temple Newsam offers opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding. The estate also includes three lakes known as the “Menagerie Ponds”. The Canal Walk is described as a walk of a specific length, while Temple Newsam focuses on a range of activities on nature trails.

Roundhay Park covers more than 700 acres of parkland, with lakes, woodland and gardens. Its wildlife includes woodpeckers, mute swans, whooper swans, great crested grebes and herons; deer also live there. These examples give nature lovers specific wildlife to look out for as they explore the park. The park therefore offers a different focus from the museum and architecture topics described above.

Family activities and food

Those specifically looking for family-friendly activities can plan to enjoy dress-up activities, themed trails and interactive features at Temple Newsam House. Leeds Art Gallery’s Artspace is also designed as a family-friendly creative area. Home Farm adds a working farm with many animals, including numerous rare breeds, to the attractions described here.

For a break to eat, Leeds Kirkgate Market offers a wide selection, including shawarma, chapati, crêpes, cockles, Yorkshire puddings and fine patisserie. Individual traders and offerings may change, so it is worth checking what is available if you are planning a specific market visit. You can shape your stay around culture, nature, family-friendly activities or food without trying to fit everything into a single day’s itinerary.
