Bradford offers different ways to explore its culture and history: from textile machinery on permanent display and an interactive science gallery to historic buildings, theatre and walking tours through the city centre. This lets you choose visits according to your interests without having to follow a set itinerary across the city’s varied offerings.

Museums spanning technology, media and police history

Bradford Industrial Museum permanently displays textile machinery, steam power, technological innovations and motor vehicles. The exhibition brings together several subject areas: machinery and energy feature alongside technological advances and vehicles. If you are interested in Bradford’s industrial and technological history, the museum offers a broad introduction.

The National Science and Media Museum has a different focus. Its two permanent galleries are called Sound and Vision and contain more than 500 objects. Wonderlab, the museum’s interactive gallery, offers hands-on activities exploring light, sound and perception. Within the same museum, you can therefore find both galleries with extensive object displays and opportunities to try things out for yourself.

At Bradford Police Museum, tours take you behind the scenes of the historic police station, including through the Victorian police cells and the courtroom. Visitors can also explore original Victorian cells, the historic courtroom and former police offices. The focus here is on the rooms and the building’s former use—a different way to explore the city’s history than the technical collections at the Industrial Museum.

Architecture, art and Bradford’s history

Little Germany is a striking architectural area: the district comprises 85 buildings constructed between 1855 and 1890, 55 of which are listed. These figures show both the extent of the building stock and the number of designated listed buildings. Bradford Cathedral offers another historic landmark. It has been a place of Christian worship for almost 1,400 years. Early works by Morris & Co. are displayed in four locations within the building.

Cartwright Hall is located in Lister Park. The gallery was built on the former site of Manningham Hall and opened in 1904. Bradford’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film is also part of the city’s history: Bradford received the title in 2009. Together, these places and connections show how architecture, religious history and film offer different themes to explore during a stay in Bradford.

Walking tours and public spaces

For a self-guided walk through the historic city centre, there is the Bradford City Centre Heritage Trail. The Bradford Film Trail is a two-mile walk through the city centre. The two routes offer different points of reference for planning your visit: the Heritage Trail is described as self-guided, while the Film Trail’s length is specified.

City Park is a public space in Bradford. It is home to the Mirror Pool, the largest urban water feature in the United Kingdom. As a public space, City Park complements the historic walking tours with the Mirror Pool.

Performances and food

The Alhambra Theatre hosts large-scale performances in ballet, opera, variety, comedy, musicals and drama, as well as an annual pantomime. The directions for getting to a performance are also useful: the theatre is a ten-minute walk from both the Interchange and Forster Square railway station. This makes planning a theatre visit more straightforward without assuming that it has to be combined with any particular other stops during your stay.

Darley Street Kitchen offers food from around the world to eat in or take away. Darley Street Market hosts special events throughout the year, including markets, cultural events, family activities and cooking demonstrations. Both may be relevant when choosing what interests you, but they offer different things: food at Darley Street Kitchen and events at Darley Street Market.

If you choose Bradford as your accommodation destination, it helps to set clear priorities: museum visits, architecture and city history, a walking tour or a performance will each give your time in the city a different focus. The places and activities listed offer specific starting points; choose the ones that best suit your planned stay.
