Leek can be explored through its clear contrasts: a nature reserve in the centre and a country park on the edge of town, alongside church art, mills and events held at different times of year. This lets you choose the focus of your stay based on landscape, cultural history or a date that suits you.

Green spaces with different characters

Brough Park Fields is a nature reserve in the centre of Leek. Its landscapes include open meadows and woodland paths; to the north, there are spectacular views of the Roaches and Hen Cloud. The site thus combines protected nature with striking views of these named hills.

Ladderedge Country Park, by contrast, lies on the edge of Leek, beside the Caldon Canal. Walking and exercising with your dog are the main activities here. The comparison is useful if you want to choose between a centrally located nature reserve with meadows and woodland paths and a park beside the canal: the two places offer different landscape settings, without requiring you to treat them as a single route.

Church art and historic buildings

Many original architectural features have been preserved inside the Nicholson Institute and Leek College of Further Education. These include the entrance hall and main staircase, as well as the museum and picture gallery on the top floor. The Nicholson Museum collection includes paintings, textiles, ceramics and objects representing everyday life. Its scope therefore ranges from artistic and craft works to objects from daily life.

The Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor contains stained-glass windows by Morris & Co. It also features examples of the Leek School of Embroidery, including altar frontals and an embroidered panel depicting part of the Hierarchy of Angels. The glass and embroidery thus offer two different insights into the works of art associated with this church.

Leek’s mills also tell different stories. Brindley’s Mill dates from 1752 and is the only known flour mill built by James Brindley. A small museum with information boards and artefacts explores Brindley and the history of milling. Visitors can see and hear a working waterwheel powering machinery and turning the millstones.

The Big Mill represents a different scale: it is an important example of a large-scale silk industry building and one of the earliest mill buildings of this size in Leek. By comparison, Brindley’s Mill draws attention to moving machinery, while the Big Mill illustrates the scale of industrial architecture.

Events by season

The Leek Arts Festival lasts almost six weeks and takes place every year from late April to early June. Its programme includes between 30 and 40 events featuring nationally and internationally renowned artists. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the specific event dates when arranging your trip.

The Leek Blues & Americana Festival takes place in October and offers five days of music. Its range includes folk, blues, Americana, jazz and traditional music, with an international outlook. The calendar thus contrasts a spring cultural festival lasting several weeks with a five-day music event in October. These different time frames can help you decide when a visit best suits your interests.

Market and local produce

The Totally Locally Sunday Supplement Market takes place on the first Sunday of every month. It offers locally produced food and crafts. Unlike the festivals, the market is held on a recurring monthly date. Check the date for your preferred Sunday visit if you would like to include the market in your plans.

There are several ways to choose what to focus on: the landscape at Brough Park Fields or beside the Caldon Canal, the architectural and artistic history of the churches and mills, or a stay timed around a festival or market. This lets you explore Leek according to the theme and travel dates that suit you best.
