Explore Dudley through several historic formats: self-guided walks, a trail with virtual information panels, and places such as Priory Park and Dudley Castle. When choosing accommodation for a stay in Dudley, your interests can help guide your choice: would you like to explore the town centre using marked or self-guided trails, or are park history and medieval heritage your main focus? The offerings differ in whether they centre on heritage sites, urban development or specific trail points.

Town walks in different formats

The Dudley Architectural Heritage Trail is a self-guided walk to 40 heritage sites in the town and is one of the town centre walks. The Dudley Town Centre Trail offers virtual information panels about the town’s history and development over the centuries. The Dudley Time Trail focuses on the route and historic markers: this self-guided walk includes 30 bronze ground plaques and three sections. It starts and ends in front of the statue of the Earl of Dudley on Castle Street, and runs along Castle Street and through Dudley Market Place. An optional detour runs from Market Place to Upper High Street and Top Church; another section passes through the area around Coronation Gardens. Check the official trail page for up-to-date route details before setting out.

The formats cater to different interests: the Architectural Heritage Trail draws attention to heritage sites, the Time Trail uses plaques and a described street route for guidance, while the virtual panels cover the town’s history and development. Another interactive trail through Dudley town centre connects 20 attractions. Visitors can learn more about Dudley’s history, art and culture by text message or by scanning QR codes on posters and artworks in shop windows. As the interactive features may change, check the latest information if you plan to use them.

Priory Park and historic traces

Priory Park opened in 1932. The council describes it as Dudley’s most important historic park. Edward Prentice Mawson designed the park for public use. His design included walking paths, flower beds, sports pitches and facilities, pavilions and shelters, lawns, trees, hedges and shrubs, as well as a lily pond. The remains of St James’s Priory in the park, which are over 900 years old, include visible boundaries of various monastic areas, a spiral staircase and medieval tiles. Wimbledon champion Dorothy Round used the tennis courts in Priory Park in the 1930s; a plaque at the pavilion commemorates her.

Castle and market history

Dudley Castle is a motte-and-bailey castle dating from around 1070. Dudley Zoo and Castle operates a land train between the zoo entrance and access to the castle ruins. As operations may vary, check the latest service information before your visit.

Dudley’s outdoor market also offers a glimpse into the history of the town centre: its origins date back to the 12th century, and it has been at the heart of the town since it began.
