Llanerchymedd combines the history of a thriving market town with nature and outdoor activities in the surrounding area. Anglesey’s largest lake, Llyn Alaw, lies northwest of the town; churches, birdwatching, fishing and cycling give your stay a variety of options.

Market Town History and Churches

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Llanerchymedd was a thriving market town. The Church of St. Mary is unusually large for a church on Anglesey; its size reflects Llanerchymedd’s importance as a market town at the time it was built. Evidence of human life in Llannerch-y-Medd dates back to around 3500 BC. This early period is well before the thriving market town of the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a longer historical perspective on the place.

Nearby is St Ceidio’s Church, also known as Rhodogeidio Parish Church. Its east window dates from the 14th century and is of a distinctive Anglesey type. Melin Gallt Y Benddu, also known as Coedana Windmill, is the oldest surviving windmill on Anglesey with a known construction date. It was built in 1737 and remained in operation until it was damaged by a storm in the 1890s.

Llyn Alaw: Birds, Trails and Fishing

Llyn Alaw lies near Llanerchymedd, northwest of the town, and is the largest lake on Anglesey. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and provides a habitat for overwintering waterfowl as well as breeding seabirds. These bird groups represent different times of year: waterfowl spend the winter here, while seabirds breed here. There are two bird hides and a network of paths at the lake. Check the individual facilities before your visit.

Llyn Alaw offers recreational trout fishing, for which permits are available. Check the latest permit details before fishing. Parc Newydd Fishery in the surrounding area offers a different experience: from Llanerchymedd, the route follows the B1152 and then a minor road. Parc Newydd Fishery’s spring-fed Llyn Edna covers 5 acres (2 ha) and is home to coarse fish, including brown trout, rainbow trout and blue trout. While trout fishing and permits are the main points at Llyn Alaw, the size and fish species are specific reference points for Llyn Edna. Check the latest information on operations and directions before setting out.

Cycling in the Surrounding Area

Quiet minor roads lead from Llanerchymedd towards Llyn Cefni, where you can connect with the northern end of Lôn Las Cefni. Check current route conditions before your ride. Llanerchymedd is also on a cycling route, with several places along the way to stop and pick up supplies. Individual businesses may change. This distinguishes the route towards Llyn Cefni from the stops and shopping opportunities in the town.
