Llanafan’s local history can be traced through three specific themes: St Afan’s Church in Llanafan-y-Trawscoed, the village’s connection to the Trawsgoed (Lisburne) Estate, and the commemoration of the First World War. A stone cottage gifted to the village adds a precise building and gifting history to these perspectives. The dates serve different purposes: they mark the first listing, the church’s reconstruction, the Hall’s gift and the unveiling of the war memorial.

St Afan’s Church: rebuilt on the same site

St Afan’s Church is a Grade II listed building; it was first listed in 2004. Around 1860, it was completely rebuilt on the same site and on the foundations of its predecessor. This brings together two aspects: a complete renewal of the building and continuity of place and foundations. The Grade II listing and the reconstruction around 1860 answer different questions—the building’s heritage designation and its construction history. This gives you a closer look at a building whose history cannot be described by a single date alone.

From estate to village: employees and the Women’s Institute Hall

The connection to the Trawsgoed (Lisburne) Estate concerns more than just a building: Llanafan was home to the estate’s employees. The Women’s Institute Hall is another example. It is a stone cottage dating from 1832, which was gifted to the village by the Lisburne Estate in 1918. The two dates mark different events: 1832 is the year it was built, and 1918 the year it was gifted. This distinction is useful for understanding the history, because the employees’ relationship with the estate describes a social aspect of village life, while the cottage and its later transfer add a specific building and gifting history. In this way, the history of the village and that of the house can be considered together without equating them.

The war memorial and its date

The war memorial in Llanafan-y-Trawscoed is dedicated to the soldiers of the First World War (1914–1918). It was unveiled on 11 December 1921. These dates should be read separately for the chronology: 1914–1918 refers to the war, while 1921 is the date of the unveiling. Unlike the dates associated with the church and stone cottage, the memorial’s date refers to a ceremony. The commemoration of the war thus adds another precisely identified historical moment to the building and village history.

Fishing on the River Ystwyth

The Trawsgoed Estate has about two miles of single-bank fishing on the south bank of the River Ystwyth, between Trawsgoed Bridge and Llanafan Bridge. The names of the two bridges provide clear reference points for the stretch’s boundaries. If fishing fits into your stay, check the conditions for this stretch directly with the Estate in advance, before making it a firm part of your plans.
