Melksham combines a historic quarter in the town centre with traces of its weaving history, an old church and a park at the heart of the town. For planning your visit, you can choose from a range of interests: local history and architecture, a seasonal splash area, and the facilities at Melksham Campus. Its own railway station, with a connection to Chippenham, also helps you plan your journey.

Historic Town Centre and Architectural History

Melksham Town Hall is a Grade II listed building. In 1847, it was a cheese market; today, it serves as the town hall. The town centre also has a historic quarter. A Blue Plaque trail features eleven plaques spread throughout the town. This means individual historic buildings can be explored alongside a trail that extends across Melksham. The two offer different ways to discover the town: the Town Hall brings together two uses in one building, while the plaques spread local history across several areas.

The church of St Michael and All Angels offers another perspective on Melksham’s architectural history. Its foundations date from Norman times; the oldest surviving fabric is in the chancel walls. During the 1845 restoration, the tower at the west end was rebuilt by T. H. Wyatt. The churchyard contains chest tombs from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The early fabric, a later alteration and the tombs can thus be distinguished chronologically, rather than treated as a single building phase.

Weaving History and Green Spaces

Melksham developed into a centre of weaving. The white broadcloth made there was exported via London to France, Spain and even Russia. London served as the link between local production and markets in several countries. This trading history adds another perspective on the town’s development to the architectural evidence.

King George V Park is a historic park at the heart of Melksham. An impressive avenue of trees defines its character. Another attraction is the Melksham Splash Pad, which opened in 2019: a nature-inspired water play area designed for up to 120 children at a time. It operates seasonally and is weather-dependent. If you plan to visit, check before you go whether the area will be open on your chosen date.

Facilities and Getting Here

Melksham Campus includes a swimming pool, a library, a gym and sports halls. If any of these facilities are important to your plans, check the latest information, as facilities may change. This gives you a practical overview without presenting different offerings as a single experience.

Melksham has its own railway station (SN12 8BN), offering a convenient connection to Chippenham station. If you plan to travel by train, check the service for your travel date, as timetables may change. The station, historic buildings, park and local facilities offer different starting points for planning your visit; which one takes priority depends on whether you are most interested in local history, architecture or the town’s facilities.
