Grittleton combines architectural history with practical opportunities to join local clubs. The Church of St Mary dates back to around 1200; Grittleton Baptist Chapel dates from around 1720 and is a Grade II* listed building. The village also has a long local cricket history, a seasonal tennis session and the Grittleton circular walk. If you are interested in local history and activities, the village offers different starting points for planning a stay.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of St Mary dates back to around 1200. Grittleton Baptist Chapel dates from around 1720 and is a Grade II* listed building. The difference in dates makes the contrast clear: the church’s origins predate the chapel by well over five centuries.

Grittleton House is now used as a school. James Thomson built it between about 1832 and 1856; H. Clutton made alterations for Joseph Neeld in 1853–1854. This later building phase adds another period to the village’s older ecclesiastical history.

The sequence runs from the Church of St Mary’s origins around 1200, through the chapel around 1720, to the construction of Grittleton House in the 19th century. This makes it possible to consider the village’s architectural history across distinct periods.

Sport and Exercise

Cricket has been played in Grittleton since at least 1868. Players of all abilities can join Grittleton CC. Grittleton Tennis Club meets on Mondays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., from April to October. Grittleton Golf Society holds four competitions each year.

The activities also differ in their timing: tennis has a regular Monday session during the season, while the Golf Society holds four competitions a year. Cricket combines a long history in the village with the opportunity to join today. When planning, you can distinguish between a weekly evening session, an annual frequency and a cricket tradition dating back to at least 1868.

Circular Walk and Getting Around

The Grittleton circular walk starts at the Neeld Arms. If you plan to walk it, check the route details locally before setting out. The starting point gives you a specific place from which to prepare for the walk.

If you are travelling via the M4, Grittleton Village Hall is five minutes from M4 Junction 17. Next to the hall is an enclosed, fenced children’s play area. The travel time and nearby feature refer to this location.

There are different ways to plan your stay: compare the buildings by period, consider sports activities by their weekly or annual schedule, or start the circular walk from its trailhead. You can assess whether Grittleton suits your interests in architectural history, specific club activities or a walk.
