Discover Torbay through a wide variety of traces: from archaeological evidence and historical collections to coastal paths, nature reserves and fishing. Kents Cavern is a protected ancient monument and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. In addition to independent cave entry, expert-led guided tours are available.

History in caves, houses and collections

Torre Abbey is a protected monument dating from 1196, set in 18 acres of gardens and parkland. The abbey houses an art collection of more than 600 works, spanning the 18th century to the present day. Here, historic architecture, extensive gardens and parkland, and art from several centuries come together in one place.

The Brixham Heritage Museum collection includes more than 10,000 objects, including fishing nets, boats and maritime models. The museum also explores Brixham’s geology and Neolithic past, the town’s importance to British fishing, and its role in the Napoleonic Wars and subsequent eras. Geological, maritime and military history offer different ways to engage with the past.

The Torquay Museum collections trace their origins to the Torquay Natural History Society, founded in 1844. A family-friendly, hands-on visitor attraction, the museum presents 400 million years of Torbay’s history. The focus differs between the museums: Brixham features topics including geology and fishing, while Torquay offers a broad panorama of the region’s history.

Art, theatre and transport history

Cockington Court is a visitor attraction and innovation centre that supports art, culture and local talent. The Babbacombe Theatre presents original productions, visiting shows and family-friendly entertainment. The two venues offer different perspectives on culture: one supports art and talent, while the other presents a programme of stage productions and visiting shows.

The history of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway can also be explored at a dedicated visitor centre. Built in 1926, the railway carried holidaymakers to and from Oddicombe Beach for more than 90 years. The visitor centre tells its story through photographs, information panels and artefacts; admission is free.

Fishing and local cuisine

More than 40 different species of fish are landed at Brixham Fish Market, including cuttlefish, plaice, sole, squid, monkfish and turbot. Market tours explain how fish are sorted and graded in the market hall. They conclude with a seafood breakfast at Rockfish. Seasonal tours are scheduled for 2026; check in advance whether a date suits your visit and is available.

Coastal paths and nature

Several specific distances can help you plan your route. The section of the South West Coast Path from Brixham to Babbacombe is 13.2 miles (21.2 km) long. The 35-mile John Musgrave Heritage Trail passes through parts of Torbay and is accessible by public transport. A 22-mile coastal path runs along the entire English Riviera through striking Geopark scenery. Check the route information for the John Musgrave Heritage Trail and the coastal path in advance when planning your route.

The walk to Greenway is also described by a specific distance: a 3½-mile path leads there from Broadsands or Churston Station along country roads. At Berry Head, nature conservation and history come together: the area is a National Nature Reserve and also an Iron Age hillfort. CCTV footage of the birds that live there is available at the visitor centre.

Paignton Zoo offers another perspective on nature: it is a world-class wildlife conservation park set in extensive botanical gardens with large lakes. Kayak tours in Torbay are also available on the water, using sit-on-top kayaks. The options range from botanical gardens and wildlife to coastal scenery and kayak tours, without prescribing a set route.
