Two subjects are especially useful when planning a stay in Lovington: historic buildings and the national cycle route Route 26, which passes by the village. The building history spans a detached 17th-century farmhouse with later building phases, a late-18th-century farm complex and an early-19th-century school. The village’s position between the Brue and Cary rivers provides another point of reference.

Rivers and roads as points of reference

Lovington lies 1 km south of the River Brue and about 500 m north of the River Cary. The rivers are therefore on opposite sides of the village: the Brue to the north and the Cary to the south. St Thomas of Canterbury Church provides another point of reference. It lies about 0.5 miles south of the B3153 minor road, which connects Castle Cary with Somerton. These are different reference points: the distances from the rivers describe Lovington’s location, while the road detail describes the church’s location.

Farmhouses from different centuries

Charity Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later building phases. Brue Farmhouse is also detached, but dates from the late 18th century and has integrated farm buildings. It is a good and largely complete example of a farm complex from this period. The comparison therefore highlights two different aspects: at Charity Farmhouse, later building phases form part of its architectural history; at Brue Farmhouse, the integrated farm buildings shape its classification as a farm complex.

Lovington School: floor plan and inscription

Lovington School and the adjoining schoolhouse date from the early 19th century. The T-shaped floor plan clarifies the building’s form: the house forms the stem of the T. This placement explains how to read the overall shape of the floor plan. Above the door lintel is the inscription “l- Lovington - 16/National School”. The number 16 is probably a house number, not a date. It should therefore not be read as dating the school; the school dates from the early 19th century.

Reported details about Charity Farmhouse

One report describes an earlier floor plan at Charity Farmhouse with three rooms and a through passage. An unpublished 1982 report, cited in the national monument register, also describes a wooden panel above a small central fireplace, depicting the house in a scene dating from the 18th century. The two details concern different aspects: the floor plan describes the arrangement of the rooms, while the panel depicts the house.
