Kingsbury Episcopi brings together two distinct perspectives: the Church of St Martin, with its architectural history and group of monuments, and trails that can be planned using different kinds of information. There is also an annual spring festival. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: focus on culture, take a walk with a stated duration, or plan around an event in the calendar.

Church and Group of Monuments

The Church of St Martin has elements dating from the 14th and 15th centuries and is predominantly designed in the Perpendicular style. The dates and style provide two distinct points of reference: the centuries apply to the architectural elements, while “predominantly” describes the church’s prevailing design.

A group of ten monuments stands in the churchyard beside the south aisle of the Church of St Martin in Kingsbury Episcopi. It comprises five chest tombs, four headstones and one pedestal tomb. The group is considered an unusually dense collection of high-quality monuments and spans three centuries. The architectural history and the history of the monuments are thus related, but chronologically distinct, aspects of the site.

Walking: Time and Terrain

For day planning, the WW1 Heritage Trail 1 is clearly defined: it connects Kingsbury Episcopi and Stembridge over 3.2 km. The walk takes approximately 1½ hours and passes through seven cattle grids. The distance and approximate duration provide a tangible timeframe; the grids add a specific feature of the route. This allows you to assess the route by distance and time required.

By contrast, the Town Tree 10k Trail Race, as described for 2025, focuses on the terrain. The route ran along paths, across fields and through orchards; it was flat, mostly off-road, and included a variety of surfaces. These included uneven ground, tree roots, stumps and low-hanging branches. The Town Tree Nature Garden was also part of the route described for 2025 in Kingsbury Episcopi.

The two descriptions provide different planning information: the Heritage Trail emphasizes distance and approximate walking time, while the race description focuses on the terrain and its obstacles.

Spring Festival in Kingsbury Episcopi

The Kingsbury May Festival is held annually in Kingsbury Episcopi, is free to attend and celebrates the start of spring. It is therefore a seasonal reason to visit, and the specific date matters when planning. Check the date of the relevant year’s festival if it is to determine your travel period.

Traditions include a flower procession led by the famous Green Man and a maypole dance performed by local schoolchildren. Programme details may vary; if you are travelling for the festival, also check the programme information for the relevant year’s event.

The Heritage Trail provides an approximate duration for a single walk; the festival is more likely to determine the right time to travel. This distinction makes it easier to plan your day separately from choosing your travel dates.
