Portishead combines views across the Severn Estuary with maritime history, art at the marina and a heated outdoor pool. This gives you different focuses for a stay: coastal scenery, historic buildings and military history, art around the marina or swimming.

Coastal views

Portishead Lake Grounds border the mouth of the Severn Estuary and offer views across the bay to Wales. From Battery Point, you can also see the Welsh coast. This brings two distinct perspectives on the coastal landscape into focus: views across the bay and a viewpoint overlooking the Welsh coast.

You can reach Battery Point via the steps beside the outdoor pool and Lido Café, or along the path from Eastwood. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check the latest path information, as routes can change. These two access routes provide practical guidance for planning your visit.

History and maritime heritage

Black Nore Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1894 as a navigational aid for shipping entering and leaving Avonmouth Docks and the River Avon. The military history of Battery Point spans the Elizabethan era, the Civil War, the Victorian period, and the coastal defence installations of the First and Second World Wars. Portishead Quaker Meeting House was converted from a 17th-century house around 1670. Together, these themes cover different historical periods: from the conversion around 1670 to the lighthouse in 1894 and the military history of several eras.

If you’d like to explore local history further, a downloadable leaflet and accompanying notes are available for the Portishead Heritage Trail. These can help you prepare if you want to make the historical sites a focus of your stay.

Art and harbour around the marina

More than twenty visual artists have contributed to the Portishead Public Art Trail. The trail centres around The Marina and extends into the residential areas of Port Marine and Village Quarter. Around Portishead Marina, three information panels explain the industrial heritage of the former docks. As signage can change, check the latest local information if you have a particular interest.

Portishead Quays Marina has 320 sheltered and secure pontoon berths. Marina facilities can change; if the number of berths is relevant to your plans, check the latest information.

Swimming and events

Portishead Open Air Pool is a heated 33-metre swimming pool and also has a toddlers’ pool. The Full Moon Swims at the pool have become a tradition and attract night swimmers from the Bristol area. As well as swimming, recurring events are another reason to visit.

The pool’s seasonal operating details may vary. If you’re planning a specific swim or event, check the operator’s latest information in advance.
