Instow Beach lies where the Taw and Torridge meet. The wide sandy beach offers impressive views across the estuary towards Appledore. For planning purposes, it is important to be clear: Instow Beach is not a designated bathing beach, and swimming there is not recommended. Check the latest local advice before entering the water.

Beach days and walks

The beach is an easy walk from the village centre. At Instow Sands, you can play beach games, build sandcastles, fly kites, sunbathe and picnic. This makes it possible to enjoy time by the water with a range of beach activities, without planning to swim.

A second beach lies north of the main beach and can be reached via a public footpath. It is suitable for walkers and for exercising dogs. If you want to include a walk or time with your dog in your stay, this provides a separate option alongside the main beach.

Ferry, sailing and routes

During the summer season, the volunteer-operated Appledore Instow Ferry crosses the estuary between Appledore and Instow. The ferry operates seasonally; check its current status before travelling.

Opposite the Quay on Marine Parade, Instow Parish Council operates a car park. It provides convenient access to the ferry and the beach near the Quay. As parking restrictions may change, check the current conditions before travelling if you plan to use the car park.

The North Devon Yacht Club offers sailing on the sheltered estuary at Instow. At the Appledore & Instow Regatta, rowing crews set off from Instow Beach. Arrangements vary by edition; check the relevant event dates for your trip.

The Tarka Trail is a 48 km traffic-free recreational route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The South West Coast Path is easily accessible from Instow.

History, views and art

For those interested in local history, Instow Signal Box is a notable point of interest: it dates from 1861 and retains much of its equipment. The churchyard of St John the Baptist offers views across Bideford Bay, providing another scenic highlight alongside the estuary at Appledore.

Waterside Gallery exhibits works by artists, potters and craftspeople from North Devon. Check before travelling whether the gallery is currently open.

Dining in Instow

Instow is known for seafood and dining options focused on fresh, locally sourced produce. Traditional Devon cream teas are another culinary option for visitors. Local produce and a classic Devon speciality add to the choices alongside the beach, walks, sailing and cultural attractions.
