Polperro can be explored through two distinct themes: the South West Coast Path, which runs through the village, and a cultural history spanning fishing, smuggling and Cornish stories. When planning your visit, it is worth considering path conditions and attractions separately. The western coastal path is challenging; the museum, model attractions and folklore each offer something different.

Coastal paths and a tidal pool

The South West Coast Path runs through Polperro and provides access from there to beaches east and west of the village. West of Polperro, the coastal path is challenging; this section includes many steps and significant ascents and descents. If you plan to go in this direction, check the path conditions before setting out, as they can change.

On the west side of the harbour entrance, on the seaward side of Chapel Cliff, there is a small tidal swimming pool. Access via cliff steps and swimming conditions may vary. Check both before planning a swim.

Boat trips with different focuses

Polperro Boat Trips runs two-hour mackerel fishing trips year-round. They are suitable for families and all experience levels, including complete beginners; trips are subject to operational conditions. There are also half-hour trips along Cornwall’s rugged coast, which are weather-dependent.

The options differ in duration and focus: two hours of mackerel fishing or half an hour along the coast. Check before you go whether trips are running, especially in light of the operational conditions for fishing trips and the weather for coastal trips.

Fishing, smuggling and village history

The Polperro Harbour Museum explores the history of fishing and smuggling from the late 18th century to the present day. It is housed in former fish cellars that were later used for storage by the fishing industry. The photographic collection dates back approximately to 1860, adding another perspective on Polperro’s past to the museum’s historical scope.

The village’s designation as a Conservation Area is also part of its history: Polperro received this designation in 1969 for its history and distinctive character. The museum connects specific past trades and their themes with the village’s historical significance, which has developed over time.

Models and Cornish stories

Polperro Model Village is a scale replica of the actual village. Its history as a visitor attraction dates back to the late 1940s. Polperro Model Railway offers a different focus: a variety of trains run continuously on this 00-gauge model railway. The layout depicts village life, farms, a river, a railway station and a depot.

Land of Legend explores the legends and superstitions of Cornwall, presenting seven stories. Light, sound and animation bring the show to life. Together with the museum and model attractions, it offers a choice of cultural themes: from Polperro’s history of fishing and smuggling to the village in miniature and stories from Cornwall.

The walk to the harbour

The only car park is at the top of Polperro. From there, it is a 15- to 20-minute walk downhill to the harbour. As parking arrangements may change, check the situation before your arrival and allow for the walk when planning your visit.
