Marazion combines the extensive sandy coastline of Mount’s Bay with St Michael’s Mount just offshore and Marazion Marsh. The beach, tidal island and reedbed offer different nature and landscape experiences; historic places add art, church architecture and local history. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the relevant conditions in mind: access to the Mount depends on the tide, and some birdwatching opportunities are seasonal or do not occur every year.

Beach and Tidal Island

Marazion Beach is an extensive sandy beach on Mount’s Bay. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, jet skiing and sailing are available at the beach; availability may vary depending on conditions and providers. If you would rather stay on shore, you can explore rock pools. Watersports and rock pools therefore offer two different beach experiences: activities on the water, on the one hand, and exploring the shoreline, on the other.

St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island just off the coast of Marazion, connected to the mainland by a causeway, and is home to a medieval castle. At low tide, visitors can reach the island by boat or on foot via an old stone causeway. Since both ways of accessing the island depend on the tide, check the attraction’s latest access information before your visit. On the Mount, the Steward’s House Art Gallery houses the Sheila Hichens Collection. The medieval castle and art collection give the island two distinct cultural highlights.

Marsh and Seasonal Nature

Marazion Marsh is Cornwall’s largest reedbed and an important wintering ground for bitterns. In some years, starlings roost there from October to December. These species offer different seasonal reference points: for bitterns, the focus is on overwintering, while the time window for starlings applies only in certain years. If you include this birdwatching opportunity in your travel plans, treat October to December as a possibility, not as a guaranteed annual event.

Church Architecture and Local History

All Saints Church in Marazion is a Victorian church designed by the architect J Piers St Aubyn, and has seventeen stained-glass windows. It is intended for private prayer. Marazion Town Museum is on the ground floor of the town hall, in a building that once served as the headquarters of the Marazion and District Fire Brigade. The two places offer different historical perspectives: Victorian church architecture and the building’s former use by the fire brigade.

Walk and Return Journey

The walking route from Penzance to Marazion’s seafront offers another way to include a coastal walk in your visit. Very frequent bus services are available for the return journey from Marazion. Check the timetable before setting off so you can plan your return journey accordingly.
