Gweek brings together wildlife encounters, tide-dependent river activities and historical sites. At the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, marine animals and their individual stories take centre stage; Gweek Classic Boatyard offers a different perspective on the Helford River.
Marine Animals and Rescue Work
At the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, visitors can see marine animals up close and learn about their individual stories. Guests can visit the working seal rescue hospital and get a behind-the-scenes look at its work. If you want to make this a firm part of your itinerary, check the latest visitor information before travelling, as access arrangements may change.
River Activities in Tune with the Tides
Gweek Classic Boatyard offers open canoe and stand-up paddleboard trips on the Helford River. Sessions can take the form of relaxed river trips or technique training; the two formats have different emphases. The type of activity and its timing are two separate decisions: first choose your preferred format, then agree on the tidal schedule with the provider. Day trips set off on the ebb tide and return on the flood tide. They must be arranged in advance. Confirm the arrangements with the provider and check availability for your preferred dates before travelling.
Creek Landscapes on the Helford River
The Helford River shoreline includes muddy creek landscapes such as Gweek and a wide variety of habitats. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is located on the upper reaches of the river. The local nature theme therefore stretches from creek shores to marine animal rescue work: habitats and animal care offer different perspectives on nature and wildlife.
Archaeological Sites and Monuments
The Tolvan Stone near Tolvan Cross in the parish of Gweek is a Scheduled Monument. It is a rare surviving and notable example of a holed stone—a stone with an opening—associated with the entrances to megalithic portal tombs. This association makes it of interest to visitors interested in prehistoric tomb architecture.
The archaeological site known as “Round 260m south of Tenament Farm” is an oval enclosure measuring about 66 metres long and 60 metres wide. It survives on a steeply sloping hill and overlooks the Helford Estuary at Gweek. In contrast to the Tolvan Stone, the enclosure is notable for its oval outline, dimensions and view across the estuary; the stone’s association with portal tombs is a key point of reference.
Gweek Methodist Church is a Grade II listed building; it was first listed on 17 June 1988. The date refers to its listing, not its construction.
