Bracknell Forest reveals itself through an unusually expansive green backdrop: woodland and forest cover 39 percent of the land, alongside more than 150 parks and landscape areas. The range extends from small woods and meadows to larger nature reserves and parks. Swinley Forest offers a striking example of this scale: more than 2,600 acres of gently rolling hills stretch from Bracknell to Crowthorne. The focus is therefore not just on individual attractions, but on different types of landscape and specific routes.

Forest, heathland and marked trails

Wildmoor Heath showcases a diversity of habitats: wet and dry lowland heath, a valley bog, and mature pine and broadleaf woodland. More than 20 species have been recorded there. A 1.5-mile circular trail, marked with badger signposts, provides a clear route for visitors. Check local trail information before setting out.

Two marked circular trails start and finish at the car park at Englemere Pond. The area is designated both as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). The markers and shared start and finish point provide clear guidance when choosing a route. Check trail conditions before your walk.

At Shepherd Meadows and Sandhurst Memorial Park, paved, hoggin and mown paths provide access within each area. As trail conditions and accessibility can change seasonally, it is worth checking current local conditions.

A hillfort and its later use

Caesar’s Camp, south of Bracknell, can be understood through its scale and construction. The Iron Age hillfort covers about 17.2 acres (7 hectares); a ditch approximately one mile long surrounds the site. It is a well-preserved example of a carefully planned and constructed contour hillfort. The term refers to a type of fortification that follows the contours of the land. Caesar’s Camp was used later as well; later earthworks include a Napoleonic redoubt.

Parkland, cinema and science

Lily Hill Park preserves three specific features of its parkland: an original yew avenue, a traditional orchard and a Wellingtonia at Forester’s Hill. South Hill Park Arts Centre has a digital cinema in a well-preserved room. Its changing programme includes independent films, Hollywood blockbusters, family films, foreign-language films and live-streamed theatre performances. Check current screenings before visiting.

The science exhibition at Look Out Discovery Centre offers more than 90 activities for children of all ages. This is a clear family-friendly highlight among the varied attractions of Bracknell Forest. It is also worth checking the latest information about exhibitions.

Activities with different focuses

Go Ape’s Forest Segway experience takes visitors along specially marked Segway routes through Swinley Forest, following an orientation and safety briefing. This is an organised activity, while the circular trails at Wildmoor Heath and Englemere Pond offer a different way to explore.

Horseshoe Lake Activity Centre offers watercraft hire and tailor-made group bookings. The options therefore range from marked routes and a Segway experience to activities on the water. Operator offerings may change: check the latest details in advance, particularly whether advance booking is required for activities at Horseshoe Lake.
