Rudgwick brings together landscape and local history in clearly distinct ways. Rudgwick Ridge is densely wooded, with steep gorges and views from the ridge. The Rudgwick Heritage Trail has a different focus: it passes Baynards Tunnel and highlights historic houses. This makes it possible to discover Rudgwick through both its landscape and its architectural history.

Landscape at Rudgwick Ridge

At Rudgwick Ridge, dense woodland, steep gorges and views from the ridge come together. If landscape is an important factor in choosing a destination, the ridge can be a focus in its own right. The view from the ridge adds another perspective on Rudgwick’s landscape to the picture of its wooded slopes and deeply cut terrain.

History along the Rudgwick Heritage Trail

The Rudgwick Heritage Trail passes Baynards Tunnel and also offers an optional detour to the medieval motte at Rudgwick. This gives you the choice between a stop along the trail and an additional detour: the tunnel is on the trail, while a visit to the motte is optional. A motte is a medieval castle built on an artificially raised mound.

The trail also highlights historic houses, many of which date from the 14th to the 16th centuries. More than 90 timber-framed houses dating from the 14th century onwards have been identified in the parish of Rudgwick. Timber framing is a building method using a load-bearing wooden framework; the term describes the construction style, while the dates place the buildings in their historical period. In Rudgwick, you can encounter both a distinctive architectural tradition and houses from different centuries.

Village fairs and community traditions

The Ellens Green and Rudgwick Gardening Association continues the tradition of village fairs featuring flower and produce shows. This cultural focus differs from the historic sites along the Heritage Trail: here, gardening, produce and the community fair format take centre stage. This extends the story of Rudgwick beyond its buildings and landscape to include a village fair tradition.

Holy Trinity: Seasonal opening hours

Holy Trinity is open daily in winter from 9 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m.; in summer, the church is open longer. If you are planning a visit as part of your day, check the opening hours again before you travel. The approximate winter closing time is a useful guide, not an exact time.

Cycling the Rudgwick/Slinfold route

The Rudgwick/Slinfold cycling route uses the Downs Link, quiet country roads and a short section of bridleway. This mix of paths is important when choosing the route: it does not follow the Downs Link exclusively, but also includes the other two types of route mentioned. The routes in question were originally established more than 15 years ago, so check their current suitability before setting off.

Your plans therefore depend on what you want to focus on: the detour to the motte is optional on the Heritage Trail, Holy Trinity has seasonal opening hours, and the current suitability of the cycling route should be checked. These differences can help you plan historical discoveries, a church visit and a bike ride according to the relevant conditions.
