Smallfield combines a long history with tangible glimpses of community life today. Historical landmarks include Smallfield Place, a mission hall dating from 1890 and a hospital from the Second World War; community gardens, sports and facilities at Centenary Hall add to the picture. If you are interested in village history and local activities, you can make these different sides of Smallfield a focus of your travel plans.

Smallfield’s history and early landmarks

There was no village in Smallfield until the Victorian era; Smallfield Place had been the seat of the De Burstow family since the late 12th century. The family seat’s history therefore reaches well back before the village was established. Smallfield Green covered 8 acres. These early landmarks are distinct: Smallfield Place points to the history of a family, while the information about the Green refers to the extent of a historic green space.

Church and wartime history

Smallfield Evangelical Church on Redhall Road was built in 1890 as a mission hall in memory of Mrs Jane Ann Tustin of Burstow Hall. Smallfield Hospital was built beside Broadbridge Lane at the beginning of the Second World War to treat wounded soldiers in the Canadian Army. The two dates and purposes have different emphases: local religious commemoration in the late 19th century and military medicine at the beginning of the Second World War.

Community gardens and leisure facilities

Smallfield Community Garden opened in May 2017 and serves as a meeting place for people of all generations. The grounds of Centenary Hall include a community art garden where visitors can walk or sit. An outdoor table tennis table and fitness equipment are available for use on the grounds. This brings together quiet time in the garden and outdoor exercise.

Sports and practical planning

For over 60 years, Smallfield Sports Club has offered football, cricket and social activities to the local community; two cricket teams are known as Smallfield Manor CC. The club also offers darts activities. A children’s playground is located on Plough Road beside the football and cricket ground. Practice Health Champions lead a walking group on the first Tuesday of each month.

The activities take different forms: the club focuses on organised activities, Centenary Hall has individual outdoor facilities, and the walking group runs monthly. This makes it possible to distinguish local leisure options by type and time commitment. There is a car park beside Centenary Hall, which can be very busy at certain times of day; a vacant parking space is therefore not guaranteed. Bear this in mind when planning.
