Seale combines a distinctive landscape with historic and craft destinations. The private Seale Chalk Pit & Meadow nature reserve lies on the Hogs Back; other attractions include the Hampton Downs footpath, the Church of St Laurence, the Manor Farm Craft Centre and the Waggon Sauna. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on nature and walking routes, architectural history and crafts, or a sauna visit.

Landscape and trails on the Hogs Back

Seale Chalk Pit & Meadow is a private nature reserve on the Hogs Back, with geologically interesting features and rare chalk grassland flowers. Geology and plant life offer two distinct nature themes: one concerns the area’s geology, the other its distinctive flora. If you are interested in the landscape when choosing a place to stay, you will find more than a general connection with nature here: the geological features and rare chalk grassland flowers give a clear sense of what makes this reserve special.

The permissive Hampton Downs footpath starts at the top of Wood Lane in Seale, behind the Manor Farm Craft Centre. From there, it runs parallel to the Hogs Back as far as the newly planted Queen Elizabeth’s Wood. The route therefore has a named starting point, course and endpoint. A 2023 announcement described the path as open to everyone; please check whether access is currently available before your visit.

Waggoners Campsite is in Seale, right beside the North Downs Way national trail. It is relevant to the campsite and the North Downs Way, so it is worth considering when planning where to stay.

Architectural history and crafts

The Church of St Laurence was rebuilt by J. Croft between 1861 and 1873, and also contains older features, including a 15th-century south porch. The church therefore brings together different periods of construction: its 19th-century rebuilding and a surviving feature from the 15th century. For a trip focused on cultural history, these details offer a concrete starting point for understanding Seale’s architectural history.

The Manor Farm Craft Centre is housed in old, picturesque farm buildings in Seale. Visitors can see a variety of crafts there, and the craft shop at the centre sells work by local craftspeople. Both the craft activities and the work of local craftspeople are therefore in focus. The old farm buildings also provide a distinctive architectural setting for a visit.

The Manor Farm Tea Room is housed in a converted cowshed, where original features have been retained. Its history can also be read in the building’s use: the cowshed became a tea room, while original features were preserved.

Sauna and choosing accommodation

The Waggon Sauna is an off-grid, wood-fired sauna on Puttenham Road in Seale. Advance booking is required for a visit. If you plan to include the sauna in your stay, booking is therefore part of your preparations; what makes the experience distinctive is the combination of off-grid operation and wood firing.

This lets you distinguish accommodation next to a long-distance trail from finding your way along a local footpath.
