West Bay is a sandy cove lined with cliffs, with excellent rock pools in the tidal zone; the cliff paths at West Bay follow the coastline. St Mildred's Bay on the coast of Westgate-on-Sea is also a cliff-lined sandy cove, with a promenade and a tidal pool. The coves have distinct features: at West Bay, rock pools and paths following the coast are part of the coastal landscape, while St Mildred's Bay also has a promenade and a tidal pool. This makes it possible to choose a coastal focus based on specific features.

Coast and history

St Mildred's Bay also has a history as a base for the Royal Naval Air Station's seaplanes. This historical connection adds a distinct theme to the landscape: alongside sand, cliffs and tidal features, the history of seaplanes is also one of the aspects associated with the bay. The coast therefore offers more than one perspective; landscape features and local history provide different points of interest.

The Westgate-on-Sea Heritage Centre aims to tell the story of Westgate-on-Sea in Kent, from the first houses of this Victorian development in 1865 to the present day. The starting point of 1865 refers to the first houses in this development; the Centre's historical scope extends beyond that to the present day. The Centre holds monthly talks on the history and heritage of Westgate-on-Sea throughout the year. Talks are currently held on the first Saturday of the month at Christ Church United Reformed Church. They start at 10:30 am, and the doors open at 10:00 am. As the schedule may change, check the current date before your visit.

Churches and architectural history

The Church of St James in Westgate-on-Sea is a Grade II listed church in the Gothic Revival style. It was built between 1872 and 1873 to designs by Charles Nightingale Beazley. St Saviour's Church is also a Grade II listed Victorian Gothic Revival church. It was built by James Naylar and Son of Rochester using Kentish Ragstone from the quarries at Maidstone. The comparison highlights different architectural details: the construction period and design of St James, and the building material's origins and builder of St Saviour's. St Saviour's Parish Church warmly welcomes visitors.

Culture and leisure

Visitors can watch a film at the historic Edwardian Carlton Cinema. As programme details may change, check which film is showing for your planned visit. Another leisure option is Westgate and Birchington Golf Club: founded in 1893, it welcomes golfers with or without a handicap. The year of its founding places the club in local sporting history; the invitation is explicitly extended to golfers with different handicap situations. Alongside the coast and history, a cinema visit and golf offer further points of interest for planning a trip.
