Maidstone offers a range of experiences for a stay: museum collections and architectural history, paths and scenery in Mote Park, and trips on the river. Maidstone Museum is housed in the Elizabethan Chillington Manor in the town centre. When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether culture, time in the park or a particular boat trip will shape your stay.

Museum collections at Chillington Manor

Maidstone Museum houses more than 600,000 objects of international significance. Its collections cover archaeology, costumes, Ancient Egypt and ethnography, as well as biology, fine art, geology and local history. They also include Japanese decorative arts and prints. The breadth of subjects offers a range of starting points for planning your cultural activities: from regional history and archaeology to art, natural sciences and collections from Japan. The museum is therefore not limited to a single period or field of study.

Churches, a palace and carriages

Maidstone’s architectural history can be seen in several specific details. All Saints Church was begun in 1395 by Archbishop Courtenay as a collegiate church. Its choir stalls feature medieval misericords. The founding date and patron provide a historical context, while the misericords add a distinctive detail to the church’s furnishings.

The Archbishop’s Palace in Maidstone is one of four similar archiepiscopal palaces between London and Canterbury. The gatehouse and 14th-century bridge at Islip’s outer courtyard entrance have survived; the bridge now lies beneath Bishop’s Way. Maidstone Carriage Museum is in the palace courtyard, housed in the Archbishops’ Stables, which date from the 14th century. The museum opened in 1946 as the Museum of Carriages. It displays more than 60 horse-drawn vehicles, including grand carriages, decorated sleighs, antique sedan chairs, Victorian hansom cabs and an original ice wagon. This brings two distinct ways of exploring the town’s history together: ecclesiastical and archiepiscopal architecture, and the development of carriages and other vehicles.

Mote Park: paths, woodland and a lake

Mote Park covers more than 450 acres and includes grassland, woodland, rivers and a 30-acre lake. Numerous scenic paths and trails invite visitors to walk and cycle. The park offers a different focus from the museum and historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on the landscape and getting out on the paths. If you would like to combine cultural activities with time outdoors, you can treat these as different parts of your itinerary rather than combining them into a single activity.

River trips with the Kentish Lady

Kentish Lady trips vary in duration, destination and schedule. At weekends and during school holidays, one-hour circular trips run from Maidstone town centre to Allington Lock or Kent Life Heritage Farm Park; a one-way trip is also available. On weekdays from April to October, three-hour lunch or dinner cruises travel to Teston via Farleigh Lock, with a choice of a picnic box or fish and chips.

Another seasonal trip runs from Maidstone to Allington Castle. Visitors disembark there for a guided tour led by castle staff. They explore the grounds, gardens, courtyards and Great Hall, and learn more about the castle’s history. To choose between trips, compare the specific conditions: the circular trip lasts one hour, while the trips to Teston last three hours; weekdays, season and destination also differ. Check the dates and availability of each trip before travelling, especially if it is important to your plans.

When looking for accommodation in Maidstone, you can start with the experience you want to shape your stay: collections and architectural history, paths in the park or a particular river trip. If a trip is the deciding factor, match your travel dates to its schedule. This lets you choose a hotel to suit your planned stay without combining the different offerings into a one-size-fits-all excursion programme.
