Ashford offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: a short historical walk, urban green spaces and landscapes with wetlands. The free Ashford Heritage Trail takes about 30 minutes, starts on the High Street and ends at Ashford Borough Museum. Its approximate duration gives you a concrete element to factor into your day’s plans; other interests can be considered separately.
Local History and Culture
Exhibitions at Ashford Borough Museum tell the story of the town. Topics include vanished shops, local archaeological finds, smuggling, contributions during both world wars and railway memorabilia. The museum is housed in a Grade II listed building dating from the 17th century. St Mary's Church has Norman foundations and has witnessed almost 1,000 years of history. Together, the two places offer different ways to explore local history: from a walk ending at the museum to the church’s historic features.
Green Spaces and Walking Routes
Visitors can enjoy free walks at Conningbrook Lakes Country Park. The landscape includes a series of lakes and ponds, a river, wet woodland and grassland; there is also a circular route. In winter, the park is home to migratory birds of open wetlands and other wetland birds. If you are walking at this time of year, be aware of the path conditions: paths can become wet and muddy. Water activities are organised through specialist clubs and associations—unlike walking, which is free, these activities are club- and association-based.
The Great Stour runs along the edge of Victoria Park. Its river corridor is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and forms part of the Ashford Green Corridor. In 2023, a seasonal wetland was created in Victoria Park, providing a habitat for frogs, newts, toads and aquatic insects. The park is also home to a paved pump track for BMX riders, skaters and other users of small vehicles.
The Ashford Green Corridor runs through the centre, from the M20 to the Ford in South Ashford. Ashford has miles of safe, car-free walking and cycling routes, as well as bicycle parking. A nearby connection, the Willesborough Dykes walking and cycling route, leads from Park Farm to Ashford Designer Outlet.
Events and Leisure
Revelation Ashford hosts music, storytelling events, children’s performances, theatre, talks and films in the restored St Mary's Church. The venue has a licensed bar, and free parking is available nearby in the evening. If you are planning an evening out, the wide range of events is a cultural highlight in its own right, alongside the town’s historic and natural attractions.
Ashford Designer Outlet offers 100 designer brands and a children’s play area with a seven-metre-high Robina treehouse. The outlet is a five-minute walk from Ashford International station. So, alongside walking routes and culture, your day’s plans can also include shopping and a convenient connection to the station.
