Godshill combines a 1:10-scale model village, a medieval wall painting and walks through the countryside around the village. It also has Munsley Bog, a designated wetland, and several tea gardens along the main street. This offers a range of options for planning your trip, with different focuses: models, heritage, nature and walks.
Model Village and Landscaped Gardens
The Godshill Model Village features a 1:10-scale miniature version of Godshill, as well as Shanklin Old Village and Chine. The display therefore includes two other named places alongside Godshill. Detailed scenes surround the model buildings; allow about an hour to view them all. Set aside this time as a separate activity if you would like to take a close look at the scenes.
The landscaped gardens at the Model Village contain more than 3,000 ornamental conifers and shrubs. The models and planting offer two distinct aspects of a visit: the miniature village scenes on the one hand, and the landscaped gardens on the other.
Church and Nature
A medieval wall painting can be found in Saint Stephen's Chapel at All Saints Church. It depicts Christ crucified on a lily and is considered one of only two surviving depictions of this kind in Europe.
All Saints Church is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00 all year round. Check the opening hours before your visit if you plan to include the church in your day's itinerary.
Munsley Bog is designated a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINC). As a wetland, it adds a distinct focus on nature to the built attractions of the Model Village and the church. This gives you a choice of focus: a visit centred mainly on models and art, or one that also takes in the landscape and nature conservation.
Walks and Getting Around
Paths lead from Godshill's main street via Freemantle Gate to Appuldurcombe. The Godshill Trail starts and ends at Old Smithy Car Park in Godshill, passes through the varied countryside around the village and connects with the Yar River Trail. The routes differ in where they lead: Appuldurcombe is the destination for the first route, while the trail is identified by its start and end point in Godshill and its connection to the Yar River Trail.
Tea Gardens and Getting There
There are several tea gardens along Godshill's main street. They add a local dining option to the church, nature and walking themes; consider including one as a possible stop in your visit plans.
Godshill is served by Southern Vectis Route 6 between Newport and Ventnor. If you plan to use the bus, check the latest timetable before travelling so you can coordinate your journey with your travel date.
