The Great Hall and Winchester Cathedral offer an introduction to Winchester’s history; Winnall Moors and the South Downs Way represent different landscapes and walking experiences.

Medieval sites and long stretches of time

The Great Hall is one of England’s most outstanding medieval halls. The legendary Round Table of King Arthur is displayed on one end wall. Here, in a single room, you encounter both a medieval building and an object from Arthurian legend.

The Westgate Museum is housed in a preserved, fortified medieval gate. At the City Museum, the city’s history unfolds across three galleries: from its origins as an Iron Age trading centre, through its Anglo-Saxon heyday, to the present day. Winchester Cathedral adds another historical landmark. For over 900 years, people have come there in search of inspiration; today, the cathedral welcomes visitors from around the world.

Tours, museum activities and traditions

Members of the public can visit Winchester College on tours offered daily. Tour times and booking arrangements may change; check them before your visit. The Hospital of St Cross welcomes visitors on their own or in groups. Access may change during private events.

At the Hospital of St Cross, visitors who ask are given a horn of ale and a piece of bread as part of the Wayfarer’s Dole. Confirm the arrangements before travelling. The City Museum offers hands-on activities for families, including the chance to handle real artefacts; programme details may change. The visitor experiences therefore differ: for a tour of the college, tour times and booking are relevant, while private events may affect access to the hospital.

Wetland, viewpoint and long-distance trail

Winnall Moors is a wetland with a chalk stream in the city centre, through which the River Itchen flows. It has a firm, level path and a wooden boardwalk just under a mile long. Both are accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs. Path conditions and accessibility may vary seasonally; check the latest information before your visit.

St Catherine’s Hill is an Iron Age hillfort on the edge of the South Downs. Walkers can enjoy panoramic views of Winchester from there. The South Downs Way is on a different scale: this 100-mile National Trail begins in the city centre at Winchester City Mill and connects Winchester in Hampshire with Eastbourne in East Sussex. A wooden boardwalk just under a mile long and a 100-mile long-distance trail differ considerably in scale, so you can plan according to the distance you want to walk.

There is also a dedicated point of reference for cycling: Winchester City Mill is on National Cycle Network Route 23. This route connection complements the walking options without treating them as a single activity.
